Letter From Our President,
Susan Allen
| |
|
Red, orange, yellow and gold leaves are starting to appear. Our rain has returned. The cycle of the seasons each year brings awareness of new beginnings and new beginnings happen for Columbia FiberArts Guild too. It is the start of our new year, for the new Board members and committee chairmen that you voted on in September. Let us welcome them and appreciate the energy and enthusiasm they bring to help our Guild thrive! | |
You have asked for more educational opportunities and that request is being honored. We are expanding the Zoom speakers open to all Guild members. In addition, workshops offered by some of our talented members will start appearing early in the new year! Do you have a talent you would like to share with others?
When I first came to Portland, I joined CFG. I wanted to meet like-minded artists. I volunteered to handle membership. It was such a wonderful way to meet people, and begin to engage with multi-talented artists. My time with the Guild has enriched my life and expanded my network of friends I can call on when I get stuck on a project or just need to talk.
I would encourage you to find a place that honors you by volunteering to become part of this dynamic group! Spending time with other Guild members-artists will enrich your artistic journey, wherever it is leading. No matter where you are headed, someone in the Guild can help guide you. Just reach out!
There will be a member survey coming out in the next couple of weeks. As the Guild moves forward we need YOU!
It has been an honor and privilege to have served as your President. As I assume the role of Past President, I will continue to serve and be available to the Board. I want to also offer a word of thanks for the outgoing Board and committee chairmen. It has been a great year!
Thank you!
Susan Allen

More Walker Bags Needed!
At the end of September Karin Graves delivered 20 bags to Providence St. Vincent Volunteer Services. They have asked to share walker bags with their seven other facilities.
Everyone, keep sewing walker bags and donating yardage, we are in the groove!
Follow the pattern given below or use your own idea. Walker bags just need to be sized for walker use and have 2 ties on each side.
| |
|
If you would like to help in another way please consider donating fabrics or thread for bags. We like using interior fabrics, just something a little more substantial than a quilting material.
Fabrics, threads and completed bags may be dropped on my front porch (see address below) or given to me at a quarterly meeting or Creative Wearables or Surface Design meeting.
Thank you to our stitchers and donors!

Join us to learn about Ann Williamson’s journey from an art history major to fashion designer of unique and elegant art wear.

Ann’s clothing incorporates a diversity of hand-sewing techniques: beading, appliqué, piecing and embroidery. Her garments exemplify her love of exquisite natural fabrics and the palette of colors and textures they offer. With images and actual garments of past and present work, and how-does-she-do-it 'in process' examples, Ann will share her life in building her business and refining her skills and techniques.

Zoom lecture
Speaker: Jane Dunnewold, Elegant Choices
Jane writes: 'My passions include the psychology of artistry and meaning. Everything I teach and do is filtered through a deep connection to the energetic, spiritual aspects of human experience. I believe each of us has an inherent creative intelligence. Making things – whether it's cooking, painting a room, or dyeing cloth – is supremely satisfying.
| |
|
'In the process of creating we are linking to every generation of makers before us and reaching for the Divine at the same time. It's a gift and a pleasure everyone should experience. And can.'
Jane teaches and lectures internationally, has authored several books about surface design, creative inspiration, and botanical and improvisational screen printing. She has mounted numerous solo exhibitions and is a recipient of the Quilt Japan Prize, and Gold Prize at the Taegue (Korea) International Textile Exhibition. In 2019 she was named Artist of the Year by the San Antonio Art League.

CFG Online Exhibition

One, Two Three, Paint!
It is time to begin thinking about your entries for the Paint and Stitch online gallery exhibition. Artwork chosen by the jurors will appear on the CFG website where you can share it with family and friends. It is time to show off your skills to all of us!
Dunnewold, Benner, Pasquini Masopust, Busby and many more artists have laid the foundation of combining painting on fabric with stitching. This technique has broadened how we think of fiber art. How do you use these two techniques to enhance your piece? What kind of paint do you use? Thread? What effects and opportunities can you achieve using these methods? Do you have a favorite artist and/or book that has helped you using these two techniques?
Many of you were present when the Guild hosted Susan Brubaker Knapp last June. She paints her image and then embellishes it with thread sketching followed by quilting. Of course, there are many ways to combine these techniques. How do you do it?

News from Glenda Mah
Glenda writes:
'My work, 5 Masks, has been accepted to the 11th annual international 2023 FL3TCH3R Exhibit: Social and Politically Engaged Art displayed from October 2 to December 8, 2023, at the Reece Museum on the campus of East Tennessee State University.
| |
'This piece contains the names of 115 unarmed individuals that were killed by police. There are 115 fractured shapes. I used hand dyed fabric for the background and hand dyed fabric sheets collaged to create the dimensional masks. The red tears were created individually by R.Bigelow and presented to me as a gift for the piece. This piece acknowledges the loss of life and the fractured lives surrounding these deaths. Families were torn by grief, communities were fractured and important issues were brought to light.
The masks represent the shared grief over the loss of life and affected communities. Fractured masks represent the destruction of life and emotions. The tears were shed and continue to be shed - hopefully leading to healing through shared grief. Hope for change to come.

'My Shibori work, Lines and Spaces, has been accepted to the Hagi International Shibori Tapestry Exhibition in Hagi, Japan, October 27 - Nov 1, 2023. The exhibit will then move to Nagoya and then Arimatsu for the Spring Shibori festival (dates to be announced).

'Lastly, I just returned from a Design Outside the Lines retreat with Dianne Ericsson in Taos, New Mexico . The guest artist this year was Susan Dillon, from Denver, Colorado. She introduced soft sculpture compositions inspired by colonization and symbiosis of organisms. I created this piece reflecting decay and loss in a world influenced by climate change. The ladder is a tribute to Georgia O'Keefe and New Mexico. Still adding a few components.'

HFD News
The final threads are being stitched into artwork for A Different View which will be turned in at the Oct 10 meeting of High Fiber Diet. Our new meeting place is St Andrews Presbyterian Church at 3228 SW Sunset Blvd in Portland. It is located just up the hill from Neveh Shalom where our CFG meetings are held. Our meeting schedule for the coming year is Feb13 on Zoom, April 9, May 14, July 9, Oct 8, and Nov 12, all at St Andrews.
We welcome new members at any time during the year, but this would be an excellent time to join us. We will begin planning and making art for our next show to be submitted in the fall of 2024. And since there is not another in-person meeting until April, this is a great time to meet the group and pay your $10 dues.
There have been many hurdles to jump this year and the exhibit committee is being very flexible. Contact Pat Fifer at pfiferpdx@gmail.com if you have any questions about submitting or turning in art for A Different View. We will be announcing opening receptions for the show soon.

Handstitching Field Day
The generous spirit that is CFG was on full display on a Friday in September as 15 members met for a Handstitching Field Day. Member-artists Amanda Snavely and Jeri Oswalt piloted the women through the basics of surface design techniques.
With Amanda’s help, we tried out ice dying, learning the basics of the process. Jeri helped us create tests of transparent, semi-transparent, opaque and metallic textile paints and practice several techniques to get color onto fabric. There were also experimentation stations with Inktense pencils, fabric pens and stamping.
The day was coordinated by Teri Wanke and Nanci Tangeman and held in Jeri’s beautiful garden in Milwaukie.
| |
The Handstitching Group meets the third Friday of every month, from 10am to noon at the West Linn Library in the Community Room (off the lobby entrance), 1595 Burns Street, West Linn.
Updates can be found on our private Facebook group.
Contact our facilitators, Terri Wanke, terri.wanke@yahoo.com and Nanci Tangeman, nanci@nancitangeman.com, for more information.
