CBRE’s survey of office-using companies reveals that most are back to developing long-term plans to expand or contract their office space now that employees are returning, at least some of the time, after two years of mostly remote work.

By extension, fewer companies are standing pat. Companies planning to maintain the same office portfolios for the next three years fell to just 9 percent in the current survey, down from 27 percent in CBRE’s 2021 survey.

CBRE’s Spring 2022 Occupier Sentiment Survey includes responses from 185 companies of all sizes with offices in the U.S.

new report from the NAIOP Research Foundation predicts that as the pandemic has increased office vacancy rates, a rising need for medical, life science and multifamily spaces offers a solution.

"Use of office space has changed as the pandemic propelled remote work and hybrid schedules for traditional office workers. This leaves the potential for older and empty office space to be converted into uses that are in greater demand creating a best-case scenario for office owners and developers as well as the sectors that need space," said Thomas J. Bisacquino, president and CEO of NAIOP.

Although it is difficult to estimate the amount of office space that will become available as long-term leases expire in the years ahead, there will be an excess supply of office buildings in most markets.

The way people work and learn has changed, and the need for flexibility and multiple-use buildings has increased dramatically. How do you set up a traditional space to fit the needs of multiple people? And what is the technology needed to achieve these goals?
