Getting Connected and Being Connected
Fr. Kevin is writing a series of articles in 2022 on what it means to be Episcopalian. If you have a topic or question you would like discussed or answered, please email Fr. Kevin at frkevin@stfrancisfields.org.
If you’re from another Christian tradition, or maybe you’re new to the church entirely, an Episcopal Church can seem like a mystery. Like any other church, our parishes are a mixture of long-standing denominational tradition, regional custom, and local preference. Because of the nature of our origin in both Protestant and Catholic histories, even Episcopal language can be strange (Where is the Narthex? What’s a lavabo?). Truth is, we may use strange words and employ ancient customs, but none of these are meant to be a barrier for anyone to to find their place of belonging and their ministry in our churches, and they are certainly not intended as a barrier to relationship with God.
Nevertheless, it can still be a challenge for newcomers, or even long-time members, to understand how to get involved and get the most out of participation in a new congregation. Some people are naturally more reticent about getting involved or trying something new. If you’re like me, you may be less inclined to “put yourself out there,” for fear that you may not be welcomed or “have what it takes”. Others just don’t know where to begin, or who to ask to get involved. That’s why some of the most important work in the church is helping people discover their place, make friends, and find ways that their gifts and talents can help in the work of our community.
The truth is, there are no “mysteries” here, or at least, there aren’t meant to be (except for the Eucharist, but that’s last month’s article). There are no secret handshakes or special privileges for certain people or vessels that, if touched wrong, will turn you into a toad. The church is just people, “warts and all” as we say, trying to figure out how they fit in God’s plan. And our hope for all members of St. Francis is that they find deep and fulfilling connections in our congregation and are able to serve God to the fullest of their abilities. Whether it’s greeting someone as an Usher, or participating in our Wednesday Bible Study, or setting up for a service as a member of the Altar Guild, or serving on a committee, or just making coffee, all of our ministries present an opportunity to match calling to community: matching your calling, that is, to our larger community.
So, if you’re reading this and you feel the prompting of the Holy Spirit to put your life into deeper service here at St. Francis, listen to those nudges. Because there’s a place for you here; a way God is inviting you to serve. Almost every ministry in our parish has room for more willing souls, and getting involved is a great way to build connections with other people and be employed in Gospel ministry. All of us are part of a bigger whole, as we were created to be from the beginning. That is no mystery, but a wonderful truth waiting to be discovered.
The glory that you have given me I have given them,
so that they may be one, as we are one,
I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one,
so that the world may know that you have sent me
and have loved them even as you have loved me.
John 17:22-23

Dinner tickets are $65 and include appetizers, buffet and soft drinks (cash bar for beer and wine.) Planning and Budgeting: We Need You!
St. Francis is beginning a Narrative Budgeting process for 2023 and beyond. This work allows us to discuss and strategically plan the ministries and events of our parish in advance of the pledging and budgeting process.
Over the next several weeks, meetings will be held to consider seven important areas of parish life: Worship, Invite-Welcome-Connect, Fellowship, Christian Discipleship (all ages), Pastoral Care, Outreach, and Exterior Landscaping.
If you are interested in being a part of any of these discussions, please contact Fr. Kevin or Jill Quinn, Rector’s Warden. Your interest and participation does not obligate you to be part of a committee, but does allow you to share in the planning process.
Please consider taking part in these important discussions, based on your interest.

Born A Crime, by Trevor Noah
Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away.
