Dear Epiphany Family,

Welcome back!

This Sunday is kickoff Sunday and your invitation to come back for the new program year at Epiphany and experience all that is meaningful and welcoming and joyful about this place that we call our church home.

COVID has changed many of our familiar patterns and we have had to figure out what we want our life to look like now in these days in which we are living. I’ve been asking people recently, with all the things clamoring for your time and attention these days, “why do you go to church?” The answers are as varied as our members but the things I have heard again and again are how much the community means to them, the support and spiritual nourishment they get in this place, the opportunities to serve through the many ways we engage with our larger community, and how much being at church grounds them in something deeper. I don’t know about you, but I need that grounding in the midst of the sometimes disorienting times in which we are living.

There are so many good things happening in the life of our parish—opportunities for worship, for formation, for service, and for community. We hope you will come be a part of it. See you Sunday.

Grace and peace,

Amy

This Sunday

PLEASE NOTE: The deadline to place an order for a grilled entree has passed. However, you are still welcome to come to the picnic and bring a dish to share.

We’ve plenty of desserts and salads, but could use more side dishes. So if you signed up without listing what you will bring, or if you haven’t signed up yet at all, please bring a side dish.

Remember to bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket.

Adult Formation

Season of Creation September 11 - October 2

Our celebration of the Season of Creation this year begins Sunday, September 11 and continues through the celebration of the feast of St. Francis on October 2.

Our celebration will include liturgies honoring creation, bread baked from locally sourced flour, locally sourced flowers at the altar, opportunities for service, and of course the Blessing of the Animals during worship on October 2.

Our four-week Adult Formation series, "Listening to the Voice of Creation," will begin on September 11. Join us as we explore with Georgia Interfaith Power and Light how the twin tasks of ecological contemplation and action are pertinent to the life of faith.

Scenes from Creation

This year we want to incorporate art into the season of creation. Rather than inviting an outside artist to show in the gallery in September, we are inviting you to bring a photograph that you have taken of a favorite scene from creation. In order to hang it in our gallery, the art ministry asks that you bring it framed with a wire for hanging (not saw-tooth hangers) to fit on the gallery hanging system. Submissions need to be a minimum size of 5 x 7, mats are encouraged, but not required.

You can deliver your framed photography between the afternoon of September 6 and morning of September 8 to be hung in the afternoon of the September 8. Please label your name and the place or name of the subject of the photograph on the back, so we can create a list for the table. We look forward to seeing the many ways you have captured the wonder of God’s creation.

EFM is Zooming!
The Education for Ministry (EFM) Zoom group got off to a good start last fall, and will continue again for the 2022-2023 school year. There are 4 states represented in the group—including GA, with Epiphany’s own Sara Cushing—and one group member from Turks & Caicos. Despite the format, the group has bonded well, but would be able to easily welcome new members. All 4 years are invited to join.
EFM is a four-year extension program of the School of Theology of the University of the South. It is partly academic readings, but the heart of EFM is theological reflection, or “TR.“ In a TR, participants discuss issues of faith, what they believe, what they question, how it relates to their everyday lives, and how they keep faith alive. Students sign up one year at a time for this four-year program. The cost of the program is $350 per year. The meetings will be held from early September through May. For further information, contact Esther Harbert.

Please join the Earth Guild for its monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 30 from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. upstairs in Room 201. We will be discussing opportunities to support the River Cleanup (9/25) and other upcoming events at Epiphany.

A Dialogue Series on Race, Grounded in Faith

Epiphany’s Racial Justice Group and members of Holy Trinity Parish's Beloved Trinity invite you to participate in the Sacred Ground dialogue series, which is part of the Episcopal Church’s Becoming Beloved Community initiative on racial reconciliation.

Sacred Ground is an 11 session dialogue series on race, grounded in faith. The series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus in Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific Islander American histories as they intersect with European American histories. The curriculum confronts the historical roots of systemic racism and examines how that history still shapes American institutions and social interactions today.

If you have interest in participating in a Sacred Ground small group over the course of the academic year with members of Holy Trinity, please email the Rev. Nicole Lambelet.

Sacred Ground 2.0 - 9/19

For those of you who have already participated in the JustFaith series “Faith & Racial Equity," and/or the initial 2021-2022 Sacred Ground series, and/or some other comparable study on racial justice and equity, please save the date for our first meeting of Sacred Ground 2.0 on September 19, from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Sacred Ground 2.0 provides a wonderful and timely opportunity for Epiphany and Holy Trinity members to continue to think theologically about the problem of racism and white supremacy, learn practical skills and competencies for deepening anti-racist work and orientation, and collaborate on efforts in our city and the wider church pertaining to racial justice.

Sacred Ground 2.0 will take place once a month and will be led by the Rev. Rhett Solomon of Holy Trinity and the Rev. Nicole Lambelet of Epiphany. If you would like to learn more about Sacred Ground 2.0, have questions, or would like to RSVP for the first meeting please email the Rev. Nicole Lambelet.

Epiphany's Racial Just Group (ERJG) is hosting a private screening of the film Code Noir including a discussion with cast members and the creative team after the film.

Born of a French aristocrat and an enslaved Haitian woman, Dumas was a hero of the French Revolution and father of the famous novelist, Alexandre Dumas. Join us to hear his story, examined through the lens of the justice system. We'll screen the movie, and then enjoy a discussion with the cast and creative team of the film, including Epiphany member Carolyn Cook. Epiphany Stars

Have you or another parishioner you know given a gift of their time and talent to Epiphany? Do you know someone who has received recognition for a personal achievement? If so, please let us know!

Sabra Hanson

Sabra, a member of the Memorial Garden Committee, is responsible for how lovely the area around the memorial plaques are.

She's also been working on organization projects in the attic since everything that had been displaced from the HVAC Ductwork is now back in place.

Paul Hinson

Paul set up the new flat screen TV in Room 201 that was purchased from an Epiphany Endowment Grant. it is set up the same as the one in the parish hall for Zoom and Streaming.

Paul also cleaned out the media closet in the parish hall of outdated equipment no longer in use.

Matt May

Matt has already been helping John with projects around the campus, but in the last couple of weeks he did all the heavy lifting with resetting the attic.

He also was on hand to facilitate getting a large desk and cabinet that we no longer needed to a new home.

John Yntema

John deserves weekly recognition  for all the time he puts in on the grounds and changing lightbulbs, but this time he's an Epiphany Star for getting the light in the handicap lift working again. It now puts out a brighter light and the motion detector is working as it should.
