The African Tribal Art Market & It's Challenges
by Joshua Dimondstein
Wednesday October 25, 2023
10:00 - 11:30 AM PDT
1.5 CEU's
According to the New York Times, worldwide art and antiques sales reached an estimated $67.8 billion in 2022. Recorded sales of African tribal art during that year were estimated to be less than $50M, or less than a tenth of a percent of the estimated total. Within such a small worldwide market segment, exposure to the market forces that normally affect and regulate value—even those as basic as supply and demand--are not always at play. During transactions, there is frequently a lack of knowledge of the relevant facts.
This live webinar event will provide a fundamental understanding of the tribal art market; how it functions at its different market levels; and how both fakes (reproductions) and collectors’ misguided perceptions and expectations can affect an appraiser's value conclusions.
Members $25.00
Non-Members $35.00

What do you specialize in, and what are the best circumstances that clients/prospects should come to you for help?
I’m a fine art appraiser specializing in American and European painting and sculpture. Of course, as the contemporary landscape evolves, I also focus on mixed and new media works of art—the whole gamut! Clients come to me with various concerns, including insurance coverage, claims and settlements, estate tax and distribution, charitable donations, sales advice, division of property.
Please describe the most interesting project you have had recently.
Whatever project I’m currently working on is the most interesting because I haven’t solved the appraisal questions yet. But a few months ago, I did a rather large appraisal for a donation of 20th-century works on paper by artists we are familiar with for their paintings. Viewing this work in the context of the artists' historical development was fascinating. I’ve always loved the immediacy of drawings and works on paper. On a completely different note, I’m working on an estate appraisal that has a Renaissance panel painting among its many contemporary artworks. I’ve brought in an expert for this piece, and it’s been a wonderful learning experience.
Who has influenced you most in your approach to your work and your professional goals?
My father, the art historian, curator, and museum director, Peter Selz, because of his persistence and the pure joy and excitement that art gave him. He worked until he was 100. Then, my mentors in personal property appraising, including Jeremy Stone, Frances Zeman, Sandra Topper, Jeanie Craig, and Andrea Roth. As a woman, finding so many strong, smart, and successful female mentors in my profession is a gift.
What do you enjoy when you’re not working?
Long dog walks with my corgi and her pack of friends.
Other than that, what’s wonderful about this profession is that work seamlessly connects to the rest of my life.

Tom O'Connor
( 1956 - 2023 )
It is with great sadness we say good-bye to our ASA colleague
and friend who passed away Sept 2, 2023
Age 67, San Francisco, CA
The memory of Tom's joyful spirit and contribution to our profession live on.
Tom was passionate about travel and found beauty in both nature and the world of art. He
founded O’Connor & Associates Art Advisors and collaborated with top interior designers to bring this passion into the homes, businesses, and lives of others. He was loved in the fine art community, and constant in his dedication to clients, friends and family.
We all will remember his infectious laugh and sense of humor.
For more than thirty years, Tom helped build the collections of numerous individual clients,
institutions and corporations. He traveled the world locating artwork, from Bali to New York
and London. Tom was a dedicated member of the arts community, volunteering his time
and expertise as a juror on the Art for AIDS panel. His charisma, enthusiasm and infectious laugh will be sorely missed in the Bay Area and Beyond.
An aggressive cancer left him with too little time, but he was able to reflect on his life, which he loved and lived on his own terms. He leaves behind his beloved partner Andy Schanbacher, and his adoring family. We often heard Tommy’s big laugh before he entered a room: today, he would want us to dry our eyes and toast him with champagne and cake.
A few of Tom’s friends and colleagues share their memories
The art world and our appraisal profession lost a dear colleague, Tom O’Connor, much too soon on September 2, 2023. I met Tom 20 years ago in the ASA POV courses that were offered at UC Irvine. We Immediately became fast friends with many common interests. Since then, Tom was my frequent companion at San Francisco art fairs and gallery visits. He had a discerning eye and I benefited from his perspectives on contemporary art. Tom was an art consultant who wanted to enhance his knowledge and service to his clients by adding the ASA AM designation. We collaborated on a few projects, always sharing information and learning from one another. Tom was a generous colleague and friend who always made one feel as if they were the most important person in the room. His laugh was infectious and his sense of humor always kept things light. My day was immediately brightened when I saw his name appear on my phone as his call came in. I will miss him terribly and I know all who knew him share my sentiment.
– Andrea Roth, Accredited Senior Appraiser, ASA, Fine Art
Tom O’ Connor. Where do I begin? I just have to recall the hours spent in Appraisal Studies PPOV and expert witness classes and IRS tips and tricks, to bring us around to “where are we going for cocktails?” Tom knew all the hot spots and we were not wont for a good time. Tom was a magnet. Or was it his “magnetic” personality? Everywhere he went, with that infectious smile and laugh, one knew that you were meeting someone special. We could bitch about appraising and bad dressers and how boring meetings were, but in the end, Tom turned out to have an extraordinary eye and talent for making friends and beautiful art collections. Tom was and still is, a one of a kind. I can’t believe I won’t see him again, or hear his calling my name from a distance, or sit down and talk trash over a cocktail. We are short one great person today.
– Xiliary Twil, ASA accredited senior appraiser, ASA, Fine Art
Tom O’ Connor was a wonderful friend to many of us. I met him over thirty years ago when I had a gallery and he was an art consultant. He would always just brighten up the room and make the person he was speaking with feel special and happy. I don’t think I ever I ever met anyone who possessed this amazing quality as Tom did. It makes me very sad that someone who brought so much joy to others was taken from us so young. I am thankful that I knew him.
