Professional Forums for Speaker Engineers
International Symposium on ElectroAcoustic Technologies (ISEAT)
Learning how to design speakers is not on most engineering curriculums in the US. There are a dozen universities and colleges teaching about becoming a recording engineer and many tech courses at vocational schools, but speaker design is another cup of tea. Back 30 years ago, Gene Petronius at Georgia Tech and Richard Small at the University of Sydney along with his mentor Albert Neville Thiele taught students about speaker design and there were a few speaker engineering courses scattered here and there at Penn State and elsewhere. There were also a number of events for speaker engineers to meet and learn about design practices, with Don Davis' Syn-Aud-Con having short courses on hot topics.

Also, back in the 1990s, on behalf of Ferrofluidics, Dupont, Teijin, and a few other clients, I facilitated The Loudspeaker University series. First held at Lowell University in Massachusetts, Richard Honeycutt wrote about the program in Voice Coil magazine. Following Loudspeaker U events took place in New Hampshire, California, and in London and Geneva, and eventually followed the audio business to Dongguan, China.

Back then the American Loudspeaker Manufacturers Association (ALMA) was just starting to evolve from a US special interest lobby to become the Association of Loudspeaker Manufacturing & Acoustics International (ALMA International), eventually evolving to today's Audio & Loudspeaker Technologies International (ALTI) Association. As reinforced in a recent article here in The Audio Voice, ALTI is a loudspeaker-centric association and is currently pursuing continuing professional education, promoting speaker building workshops, and college outreach on behalf of its Student Chapter.
The Speaker Builders Workshop has been a popular initiative at ALTI Expo and it's probably a great idea to promote at other audio industry events from NAMM to CEDIA.
COVID-19 permitting, ALTI intends to promote two events next year. The first one in Europe, held in conjunction with the High End show in Munich, May 18-21; and the second held shortly after, ALTI Expo, June 11–12, just before the InfoComm 2023 show in Orlando, FL. On behalf of its members, ALTI is also planning hospitality suites to promote business and foster the association's charter for the audio industry. These suites are ideal for companies that don't normally exhibit but need a meeting point and facilities to conduct their business. The first one is currently being planned for CES 2023, at the Venetian in Las Vegas, NV (positions are already limited - reach out to Barry Vogel now).

And there is the Audio Engineering Society (AES), which is an outstanding international organization but of course encompasses a wide view of audio and acoustics, with loudspeakers just one of many areas. Within the AES, there is the Audio Products Education Institute (APEI), which started out as the Product Development track at AES conventions. APEI has a range of pillars that provide guidance related to our work in key aspects, such as the supply chain, modeling and measurement, new trends in automotive audio, signal processing, and more. The next opportunity to follow APEI's activities will be during the 153rd AES New York 2022 Convention, taking place at the Jacob Javits Center, October 19–20 - a short two-day event.
Barry Vogel (ALTI Executive Director) recently wrote about the Audio & Loudspeaker Technologies International Association’s renewed mission and vision. ALTI Expo 2023 is now scheduled to take place in Orlando, FL.
Online ISEAT 2022
Considering that China is, at least for now and the near future, the center of global speaker manufacturing, it is not surprising that a strong infrastructure for R&D and production testing has also developed. With so much of the speaker engineering and production in China, and with most of the speaker engineers’ alumni from Nanjing University, the International Symposium on Electro-Acoustic Technologies (ISEAT) was formed in 2007 as a local initiative to create much needed networking and education. Facilitated by the Shenzhen Research Institute of Nanjing University, ISEAT quickly became the preferred professional forum for most Chinese speaker engineers and has blossomed into a must-visit international event, taking place every two years.

I attended the 7th edition in 2019, and articles published by audioXpress and Voice Coil magazines are available online here offering a complete perspective of this high profile event.

Originally planned for November 2021 and cancelled because of the pandemic, the 8th ISEAT is now scheduled to take place as a combination of live and virtual segments. Prestigious scholars, senior engineers and technology decision-makers are going to share and communicate about their latest developments in the applications for new technologies, materials, and equipment in the electroacoustics and relating areas. The Symposium dates are September 17-18, 2022 and it will take place at the Grand Sky Light Hotel, Pingshan District, Shenzhen, China. Registration to attend is now open.
The 8th ISEAT will be held September 17-18, 2022, at the Grand Sky Light Hotel, Pingshan District, Shenzhen, China. Registration to attend is now open.
For a good overview of iSEAT, the event, and the companies that attended in the previous edition in 2019, visit our online coverage - click on the image.
The next edition of ISEAT promises to once again attract some of the loudspeaker industry titans, most of the testing and audio measurement companies, and several speaker vendors, including many microspeaker manufacturers that always have a presence at this event - all looking to attract young engineers graduating from technical colleges and universities. AAC Technologies, Shenzhen Horn, Mingseng, GGEC, VM-sound, and many others whose focus is upscale microspeakers will attend. Another notable exhibitor is TCL Tonly, a major OEM/ODM force in headphones, Bluetooth speakers, smart speakers, as well as a leading brand in TVs and other consumer electronics.

In past years, presentations from leading audio experts included notables professionals including A.N. Thiele, Wolfgang Klippel (Klippel), Steve Temme (Listen, Inc.), Sean Olive (Harman), Peter Larson (Loudsoft), Richard Little (now at Amazon Lab 126), Ken Forsythe (EAW), Mark Dodd (Celestion) and Prof. Zhao Qichang of the Electric Acoustics & Environmental Acoustics Laboratory.

For this year's edition, ISEAT has invited a greater number of industry experts from all over the world to address the audience, which will attend the event in China. Many specialists will share their research and projects, and will have the chance to demonstrate and display their work - online and onsite. Given the current pandemic restrictions for entrance to China, most of the presentations from outside China will be recorded or done remotely. Professional and accurate Chinese translations are provided for all materials and presentations.

ISEAT is chaired by Professor Yong Shen, the director of the Acoustics R&D Center of Shenzhen Research Institute of Nanjing University, Fellow of Chinese Institute of Electronics, a council member of the Acoustical Society of China, and the head of the Expert Group of the Electro-Acoustical Branch of China Electronic Components Association.
Prof. Zhao Qichang, former head of the Electric Acoustics & Environmental Acoustics Laboratory at Nanjing University, director of the Acoustical Society of China, leader of the Professional Audio Group of Performing Venue and Equipment Committee of China Entertainment Technology Association, and member of China National Technical Committee of Standardization for Acoustics, addresses the audience at ISEAT 2019.
In preparation for the next ISEAT, Prof. Yong Shen sent us the following message:

"Because of the pandemic, the 8th ISEAT, which should have been held last year was postponed, but we are determined to hold it this September - in a combination of online and offline. In the 8th ISEAT, attendees will get a very high level of quality papers and presentations; the possibility to communicate and exchange with worldwide specialists; and learn much about the newest technology and industry information. I am looking forward to reuniting with you all very soon."

From my perspective this is a unique opportunity for Westerners to have a clearer understanding of the advances in audio engineering from the Chinese perspective. There is always a gap between what scientists and research departments at the universities do, and what product developers face with the challenges of budget, limited risk assessment, and time to market constraints. Getting everyone to talk to each other and reach out is always the challenge. I would say that, more than any other audio event, ISEAT contributes to this mixing pot of visionaries, QC and production engineers working on production lines, and all those in between.
