Noah Seale, Eagle Scout

Above, Eric Seale, Noah's dad, Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster of Troop 5, Eric Seale, Heather Seale, Noah's mom and Oscar, his brother.

Noah’s Eagle project was to install markers at the emergency trailheads and mark the helicopter landing zone at Medoc Mountain State Park. This addressed a serious need identified by the Medoc State Park rangers to improve emergency service response time. Noah organized a team of scouts who built and installed the markers at each trailhead. They then installed four concrete pavers in the main Medoc field to identify the space necessary for a rescue helicopter to land. Noah used the leftover money from his project fundraiser to purchase and donate plants to beautify the Medoc ranger station.

Great job, Noah!!!

History Day 2024

April 27, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m., at Christ Church, Raleigh, and Historic St. John’s, Williamsboro

John Stark Ravenscroft was the first elected bishop of North Carolina, serving from 1823 to 1830. Our 2024 History Day marks the bicentennial of his episcopate by exploring his understanding of church and society, and by setting those views in a larger historical context.

Ravenscroft’s tenure as bishop has been long remembered for his staunch high church orientation. But Ravenscroft was not always an Episcopalian, much less a high churchman. He was a Virginia planter who underwent a religious conversion when he was 38 years old, and he didn’t become an Episcopalian until he was 43. Charting the twist and turns in Ravenscroft’s religious and social outlook will be our diocesan historiographer, the Rev. Brooks Graebner. Setting Ravenscroft’s views in a larger historical framework will be the Rev. Dr. Benjamin King, Professor of Church History at the Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest.

Following these addresses, the Rev. Lindsey Ardrey, canon missioner for diocesan restitution and reparations ministry, will offer a response to the presentations from the perspective of our diocesan commitment to restitution and reparations.

The day concludes with a visit to St. John’s, Williamsboro, the oldest frame church in North Carolina and a historic property of the diocese. St. John’s was the site of the 1824 diocesan convention, the first over which Ravenscroft presided and where the bishop first publicly declared his high church views.

HUGS Camp: Staff and Buddy Camper Applications Open

The planning for HUGS Camp, taking place July 8-13 at Haw River State Park, is underway, and applications for both staff and buddy campers are now open.

HUGS is a unique camp for unique people, bringing together young people of diverse abilities. They overcome barriers of real and imagined differences and build bridges of understanding. HUGS is about acknowledging the good creation in each of us and more fully knowing and loving our God through it. The great differences among campers and staff help all of us learn to appreciate and celebrate our diversity as we recognize our common ground.

Camper applications will be available at a later date.

Registration is Open: Pilgrimage to Wilmington

Pilgrimage dates: May 10-12

Announced earlier this year, registration is now open for the diocesan pilgrimage to Wilmington, North Carolina.

Based on the book Wilmington's Lie by David Zucchino, the subject of the diocesan book study currently underway, the pilgrimage is taking place on the new dates of May 10-12. Participation in the book study is not required to take part in the pilgrimage, but it is recommended that the book be read before departure.

Throughout the three days, pilgrims will integrate learning and experiences from the book with worship and reflection. The pilgrimage includes bus transportation to and from St. Luke’s, Durham, lodging, meals and a host of activities.

Spaces are expected to fill quickly, so reserve yours today!
