Communities of Excellence:

Making America a Better Place
to Live & Work

Thursday, September 8, 2022 at 8:00 AM

America faces great challenges as we approach the year 2026 – the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding. Communities across our country have struggled to confront systemic problems such as educational disparities, deteriorating public health, and inequity in economic opportunity.  Moreover, efforts to address these and other critical issues are often carried out in silos, without a solid, systematic framework for cross-sector collaboration and performance excellence among key players and stakeholders.

The  Wisconsin Center for Performance Excellence —in partnership with the Performance Excellence Network-- is pleased to host an online webinar discussion on Thursday, September 8:

Communities of Excellence: Making America a Better Place to Live & Work.”  The discussion will feature a panel of leaders from four US communities, each using the Baldrige-based Communities of Excellence Framework to address community challenges, optimize community resources, and improve and sustain community outcomes.  The panel includes:

  • Manuel Castaneda, San Diego, CA
  • Kim Halfill, Excelsior Springs, MO
  • Karen Kiel-Rosser, Amex IA
  • Dr. Dave Tilstra, St. Cloud, MN

Moderating the panel is Stephanie Norling, Executive Director of Communities of Excellence 2026, a nonprofit that hosts a national learning collaborative of communities across the country; trains communities in the Baldrige-based Communities of Excellence Framework; and provides opportunities for communities to work together, share successes, challenges, ideas and best practices, and learn from each other on their performance excellence journey.

The panel will share their communities’ experience with the Framework – their lessons in mobilizing a community-based improvement effort, how to get (formal and informal) leaders engaged, how to build infrastructure to sustain a community excellence effort, and what worked (and what didn’t) in starting and sustaining a community excellence effort.

Communities are highly complex systems, filled with many organizations, residents and other stakeholders, assets, strategic challenges and advantages.  Come learn how over 30 US communities are using the principles of excellence – those we know work in businesses and organizations – to solve community problems and improve community outcomes.  Come learn how these concepts could improve where you live and work! We're looking for our first Wisconsin Community to participate!

This session is Thursday, September 8 from 8:00-9:00 CT (optional networking and mingling 7:45-8:00) using Zoom MEETING. Grab your coffee and breakfast, and join us for a rich discussion. Free for PEN/WCPE members; $20 for non-members.

Can’t make it live but interested in the content? Register anyway: all registered attendees get a link to the recording after the session!
