BE THE LIGHT

By Jo Strausz Rosen

As December 2022 draws to a close, we are so grateful to each of you who have supported our residents and staff, volunteered at JSL, and made generous contributions. Each of you helps us continue our mission of nurturing our community and enriching the lives of all who live here.

We look forward to new beginnings as we anticipate the annual celebration of Hanukkah. Whether we share it in small groups clustered around our menorahs at home, or out in the brisk Detroit winter with a merry crowd at Menorah in the D, we create a light in the darkness. Wherever we are, as we strike the match that kindles the shamash to light the first of 36 candles, we will enjoy the season’s shining inspiration at sundown on Sunday, December 18.

8 FUN CHANUKAH HOLIDAY FACTS

Some latke fun facts for you on this festival of lights...

1) A menorah is lit each night of the holiday.

2) The word 'Hanukkah' means 'dedication.'

3) The many spellings: There is no correct way to directly translate the Hebrew sounds to English, so it is also pronounced many ways.

4) The dreidel is based on a German gambling game: A spinning top with letters printed on its side was played in both Germany and England starting in about the 16th century. European Jews adopted the game and replaced the German and English letters with Hebrew ones to engage with the scripture. Now the dreidel is used throughout the holiday.

JSL HAPPENINGS

'CHANUKAH WITH GRANDFRIENDS'

On Sunday, Dec. 11 at Meer Apartments, residents and children from The Shul used markers and stickers to decorate cardboard to make a giant menorah. They sang Chanukah songs, played Q & A games, ate latkes, and created delicious donuts with assorted filings, then watched as one of the Shul members put the menorah together. "Residents loved every minute of it," said Myriam Cohen, Meer Life Enrichment Coordinator. "We love it when members of The Shul come to visit. It is an amazing synagogue that is invested in the welfare and happiness of our residents."

Dor L’Dor

Janet Antin explained to 6th graders at Hillel the importance of being sensitive to the important issues facing older adults. The JSL community is excited to welcome students participating in the Dor L’Dor program after a two-year recess due to COVID. For the next two years, this grant-based The program will develop opportunities for JSL residents and Hillel students to celebrate holidays and build bridges between the generations. Janet illustrated some of the challenges older adults face through games and explanations of how blindness, arthritis, hearing loss, and other deficits are opportunities for students to assist their new friends.

Miracles

Miracles must always remain alive in our hearts never to be forgotten. Our amazement and deep appreciation must never wear off. Last year at this time our community celebrated the release of Huntington Woods native Danny Fenster from a prison in Myanmar. Here is an insight on miracles:

Danny’s family name, Fenster, means a window in Yiddish. A window allows for crystal clear vision to the outside. Danny’s miraculous release provides a window of opportunity for all of us to witness the Divine hand in our lives today.

A window (fenster) can be open or closed making all the difference between light and darkness. An open window allows for recognition of G-d’s continuous benevolence. Should this window be blocked and our sensitivity toward miracles lessened, the very word Fenster (window) would become Finster (darkness).

Danny’s miracle occurred in close proximity to Chanukah at which time the miracle of the lights shines brightly through the window. Let us keep our window open to perceive daily miracles in our lives. Be inspired by Chanukah and examine the miracles in your life and be wise to repeatedly celebrate them.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
