There's been a change in the morning light and temperatures are finally getting a little cooler. All signs that the hunting season is rapidly approaching. Exciting!
The first day of early hunting is September 10 - 7:30 at Frederick’s Field in Meadows of Campbell Creek so now is the time to check your hunting tack and clothing to make sure all is gleaming and it still fits!
Please complete your paperwork in advance and submit to Roberta McKinney on or before your first hunt. You can download all forms from the Resources tab at TryonHounds.com and click here to obtain your required SC and NC hunting licenses.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

MFHA Conference
The Masters of Foxhounds Bi-Annual Staff Seminar was held in Franklin, TN on June 17. We had a great group attending from Tryon Hounds – Masters Bonnie Lingerfelt, Dean McKinney, Nelson Minnick, Huntsman Beth Blackwell and members Roberta McKinney, Jeanne and Dave Ahrenholz, and Jim Richie.
The agenda included: Making of a Field Hunter, Riding Safely Following Hounds, a session on Hounds, Hunting, Huntsman and Whippers In, and a Masters' Round table. Approximately 125 people attended from hunts mostly based in the southeast. The meeting concluded with a tour of the Hillsboro Hounds kennels. It was such an informative event and we all enjoyed a lovely dinner together in Franklin.

Foxhound Spotlight
by Claire Newsom (Beth's Niece)
I visit this area during every school break and spend four weeks in the summer to help take care of the hounds and horses. As a result, I have come to know all the Tryon Hounds fox hounds, but my favorite must be Xon.
Xon was born at Moore County Kennels and drafted to my aunt, Beth Blackwell, the huntsman of Tryon Hounds. De La Brooke Kennels is where Xon got his formal name.

New Barn Annex - Happy hounds, happy huntsman, happy hunting!
|
|
Many thanks to the Sporting Hounds Foundation of Tryon for helping us to complete the construction of our new “Barn Annex.” The shed, which went into service in March, needed a shade extension to complete the vision of the designer, our huntsman Beth Blackwell.
The option selected, an extended shed roof of insulated metal built by OK Construction, exceeded our budget by over $1800. Members of our board, along with our Masters, pledged their support to bridge the gap and made directed, tax deductible donations to SHFT, which granted our request for the funds to complete the job.
A win-win for everyone!

Tryon Hounds Member Spotlight
Nelson Minnick
Nelson's interest in foxhunting was ignited after he and his family listened to a presentation
on foxhunting through their 4-H Club at South Lake Christian Academy in Huntersville, NC. They rode with Yadkin Valley Hounds for 3 years before the family moved to Hendersonville, NC in 2002. They joined Tryon Hounds in 2003, but Nelson wasn't riding because he had never ridden in an English saddle. However, Members of the Tryon Hounds continually encouraged him to take up the sport, which he finally did, becoming a riding member in 2004.
Nelson genuinely enjoys all hunt activities and the comradery of his fellow members in endeavors such as trail clearing, hunter paces, working on the clubhouse, kennels and grounds, as well as serving in various capacities on the board. He currently co-chairs the Hunter Pace and Trail Clearing committees with Master Dean McKinney and has served on the Tryon Hounds Board as a Board Member, President and Vice President.
Nelson’s greatest joy is hunting on his crazy horse, Ziggy, on cool crisp fall mornings, enjoying the beautiful countryside with likeminded foxhunting enthusiasts. He loves the thrill of getting on a run, hounds in full cry, while leading First Flight.

Tryon Hounds Finances - An Update
The income story is positive YTD: member subscriptions are coming in a little faster than we budgeted, and our Spring fundraisers - the hunter pace and the Spring Fling - both outperformed our expectations.
Expenses in total are also under budget, although some categories such as hay are up, as anyone who has bought hay lately recognizes.
So overall, we're doing better than budgeted. But our budget was for an uncomfortable loss this year, with hopes that we would do better. Thanks to all our membership and especially all who volunteer their time and effort.
