USDA announces $401 million to expand rural internet

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the investment of $401 million to improve high-speed internet access in rural areas. The project will deliver high-speed internet access to 31,000 rural residents and businesses in 11 states.


The investment includes $61 million in loans and $295 million in grants through USDA's ReConnect Program, and $45 million in assistance through USDA's Telecommunications Infrastructure Loan and Loan Guarantee program. Additional announcements will come later this summer regarding the remainder of the $1.15 billion in support for rural broadband included in round three of the ReConnect Program.

Dairy farmers head to D.C. to push for Dairy Revitalization Plan

A coalition of farmers from throughout the country took time away from the farm and field recently to gather for a Dairy Together Fly-In to Washington, D.C.


Representing key dairy states and a coalition of farm groups under the umbrella of Dairy Together, the participants advocated for meaningful dairy policy in the next farm bill and shared the Dairy Revitalization Plan with their state delegations and members of the House and Senate Agriculture Committees.

Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program payments to start this week

A campaign that began in The USDA is increasing the amount of funding available for the Spot Market Hog Pandemic Program and expects to issue approximately $62.8 million in pandemic assistance payments to hog producers starting this week. SMHPP assists eligible producers who sold hogs through a spot market sale from April 16, 2020, through Sept. 1, 2020. USDA's Farm Service Agency accepted SMHPP applications through April 29, 2022.

Port of Oakland shutdown a major roadblock for U.S. red meat exports

Protesters last week shut down operations at the Port of Oakland over a new trucking regulation that would limit independent operators. The protesters not only blocked cargo, but port workers also refused to cross truckers' picket lines.


A prolonged shutdown could have a dramatic impact on U.S. red meat exports and ag exports as a whole,

WLIC is hiring a database manager!

The database manager will support the health and integrity of the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium’s premises registration database. This position will provide technical assistance and support for the users of the system, perform regular audits of the system’s data, and handle ad-hoc reporting as needed/requested. In addition, this position provides data entry support for WLIC, including entry of Certified Veterinary Inspection (CVI) reports, premises registrations and renewals, and other data as required. This position reports to the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium’s Executive Director.
