Scout In Need: Personal Care Attendant to Spend a Week
at TBS Summer Camp

A local family is searching for a young person to be a Personal Care Attendant during summer camp at T. Brady Saunders the week of July 10th - 15th, and possibly for future Scouting trips for Ben, an 11 year old with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Citizenship in Society Merit Badge Counselors Needed
|
The new Citizenship in Society Merit Badge becomes required for all Scouts as of July 1, 2022, so counselors are needed ASAP! Since this badge is to be taught in small groups to Scouts within their own troop, the Heart of Virginia Council needs every troop to select at least one person who will help guide Scouts on their journey of self-discovery.

Important Camp Card Update

We are about 3 weeks until the end of our Camp Card Fundraiser! Camp Cards and payments are due by Friday, June 17th. Payments can be made by cash or check made payable to Heart of Virginia Council. We have TWO more Camp Cards prize drawings: June 1st and June 8th. We truly appreciate your participation in the sale and hope that your Scouts have sold some cards to help pay their way to Summer Camp!

Our annual Friends of Scouting Dinner took place on Thursday, May 12th, at the Richmond Convention Center. Presented by Blue Ridge Bank, this special event was well-attended and proved to be a true celebration of Scouting here in the Heart of Virginia Council. Joined by special keynote speaker, Kevin Lacz, the Scouting community enjoyed an evening of fellowship, all of which was caught on camera.

Sweet Potato Planting Service Project Opportunity

104 Ministries is hosting it's Sweet Potato Planting Service Project benefitting the Prince George Food Bank. They have 2000 slips that need to be planted, so even coming out to help put a few in the ground would be a big help. Tasks include making a space in the straw mulch with a garden trowel, placing a slip in the slot, watering it in, and closing the slot. Come out on Saturday, May 28th!

You don’t want to miss the opportunity to enjoy a post-game movie and pitch a tent on the outfield for a major league camping experience. Can’t stay the night? No harm, no foul. 2022 Den, Pack, and Troop Driven Recruitment Resources

Every fall, the Heart of Virginia Council conducts a Join Scouting Night Campaign to invite new families to join packs, troops, crews, and posts. This fall we will again hold a JSN campaign, primarily utilizing promotions efforts through local schools. However, your den, pack, or troop can hold additional recruiting events that leverage social media and word-of-mouth marketing to invite new families out to one or more of the fun activities that your unit is already doing. Use our helpful guide and planning worksheet to help you hold a successful recruitment event.

James River Soil & Water Conservation District Patch Program

This special program is open to Scouts to further their interest and education in conservation topics. There are three exciting patches available that can be earned by completing their "Healthy Soil Healthy Life" poster contest, inviting a representative to speak to your unit about Living in your Watershed, and inviting a representative to speak to your unit about soil! Arrohattoc District Distinguished Citizen Award Breakfast

|
The Arrohattoc District is pleased to host the 2022 Distinguished Citizen Award Breakfast presented by the Rotary Club of Brandermill and honoring Dr. Mervin B. Daugherty for his outstanding service to the community. This special event, scheduled for Thursday, June 9th at 7:30am at the American Legion Post 186 in Chesterfield includes a free breakfast for all attendees. First Year Camper & Parent Pre-Camp Orientation

We're excited to offer a special orientation for first year campers and their parents. This will take place at Camp T. Brady Saunders on Saturday, June 18th from 9am to noon with a hot dog lunch provided. This program is designed to relieve anxieties first year campers and their parents might have about Boy Scout long-term camping. Unit registration is open for Summer Camp 2022 at Camp T. Brady Saunders. There are six total weeks available to choose from, running from June 19th through July 30th. There are 16 separate campsites, four shower houses with individual rooms, a large air-conditioned dining hall, trading post, health lodge, aquatics program, and so much more. Summer Camp Provisional Troop 3

Missing your troop’s summer camp this year or do you want an additional week of fun and adventure? Become part of a cohesive unit experience while having fun, learning new skills, & earning merit badges. Troop 3 will also offer a few unique experiences beyond the regular camp programs. Provisional Troop 3 offers both a girl’s troop & a boy’s troop and is open to all registered youth and adult Scouts BSA, Venturing, and Sea Scouts. Trained leadership provided by the Nawakwa Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s Honor Society.

Advancement, Training and Life Skill Opportunities

June District Roundtables / UP3
|
|
|
District Roundtable is a monthly program offered by districts that give leaders hands-on experience and provides a forum for leaders to offer and receive help from their fellow Scouters.
In June, Districts will host UP3 events which will serve as their monthly Roundtable event.
|
|
Swimming & Water Rescue Adult Leader Training will be available June 3rd - 5th at T. Brady Saunders. This training allows you to be the supervisor on a swimming outing with your unit. It also allows you to conduct swim tests. This training is offered during each week of summer camp, but this is a bonus opportunity being offered before camp starts. Registration closes on June 1st!

Lifeguard Training will be available June 3rd - 5th at T. Brady Saunders. You must complete the Safe Swim Defense course through my.scouting.org, and bring along the printed completion certificate. You must also receive additional training, to include CPR. Candidates must also serve as a lifeguard, under supervision, for at least two separate BSA swimming activities for a combined time of two hours. Registration closes on May 31st!

Trainer's EDGE Summer Session: June 27th - 28th

The Trainer's EDGE helps develop the skills of leaders and trainers. It focuses on improving the participant’s leadership, communication, and training skills. The Trainer’s Edge is the required train-the-trainer course for Wood Badge, Commissioners’ College, NYLT staff, and all other BSA training courses. The Course is highly beneficial for all leaders and trainers. This opportunity is scheduled for June 27th - 28th at the T. Brady Saunders OA Pavilion.

Rivers District Introduction to Leadership
Skills for Troops Course
|
|
All BSA Scouts can participate. This course is for every Scout in the troop who holds a leadership position, including all elected positions, and any appointed positions at the discretion of the senior patrol leader. In some troops, this might mean that this course is for every Scout. Register for the Saturday, August 27th training from 9am to 3pm at Beale Memorial Baptist Church in Tappahannock.

Wood Badge 2022 is an advanced, national leadership course open only to registered Scouting volunteers and professionals. Adult leaders from Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing, Sea Scouting, plus district and council Scouters are all are welcome and belong at Wood Badge. Registration is OPEN for the fall training, scheduled over the weekends of October 7th - 9th at Cub Adventure Camp, and November 5th -6th at T. Brady Saunders. You don't want to miss this opportunity!

2022 Eagle Brick Unveiling Ceremony
|
|
The 2022 Eagle Brick Unveiling Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, September 17th, 2022! A great way to honor your Eagle Scout is to sponsor a personally engraved Eagle Brick. The cost is $200 per brick which includes engraving of up to eighteen characters per line (letters, space and punctuation) with a maximum of two lines. To be included in the 2022 Eagle Brick Unveiling Ceremony, brick orders must be received by July 8th, 2022.
