The Gratitude Corner
A fabulous lobster picnic was enjoyed by our members and their guests this past Saturday. A thousand thanks to Skip Greenlaw and Judy Miller for once again organizing this event. Thanks, too, to Jane LaChance and the ever-helpful Welcoming and Hospitality Ministry for assisting.
No words describe how lucky we are to have these two women part of our St. Brendan story.
This photo was taken before Cynthia Bourgeault's talk on Sunday afternoon.
From our Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

During these times of strong opinions and inflamed rhetoric, the art of compassionate listening has all but been forgotten. The capacity to really listen to another person’s story or viewpoint without trying to figure out what we’re going to say next (while we’re supposedly “listening”) is one of the greatest gifts we can give to one another. But it takes intention and practice and some “learning” to truly begin incorporating the gift of “holy listening” into our everyday lives.

To that end, I have included two links to the Daily Meditations of Father Richard Rohr from this past week. These meditations are a place to begin thinking about the challenge and the gift of “holy/compassionate listening.” I encourage all of us (including myself) to consider finding ways to practice the wisdom shared in these meditations. Perhaps this kind of listening is at the heart of what the writer of Ephesians is talking about when he writes to the Christians in Ephesus, “Lead a life worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

When Martin Luther was asked to draw a picture of a Christian, he drew a picture of an ear. And while it’s assumed that Luther was speaking about the importance of keeping one’s ears open to hear God’s Word, I wonder if perhaps we might also consider his picture of the ear as a challenge to keep our ears open to hear what others have to say, in that deeper sense of “holy listening.”

Perhaps we might try it and see what happens.

  • One way to "love our neighbors" is to go bike riding with them! Please join us for the "Family/Community Bike Ride" on Sunday, July 31 at 12:30 starting from the St. Brendan parking lot. Who knows what new friends you might make?

  • Many of our neighbors are having difficulty paying the high prices of gas, which affects their ability to get to work and appointments. Please consider purchasing a gas card from a local gas station and putting it in the "gas pump" which you will find in the narthex at church. We will give them to Community Compass Navigators for disbursement to those who need help with the cost of fuel. This is one more way to "love our neighbor."

Stewardship
Stewardship Committee Report

Our heartfelt thanks are extended to Barbara Kourajian for writing our stewardship letter for 2023. By the time you receive this notice in the Navigator, you should have received Barbara’s letter.

One year ago members of St. Brendan pledged $125,000. This was an incredible 23% increase over the previous year’s pledges. Quite an accomplishment!!

Members of the Finance Committee have consulted each other to set a stewardship goal. We decided that if everyone could maintain their pledge from last year the church’s finances would continue to be in very good shape.

Our goal is to have the pledging completed by August 21, and perhaps we have an informal celebration of our accomplishment on Sunday, August 28.

Thank you, Barbara, again for your thoughtful letter!

A soup for the senses

The aroma! The color! Monday's Simmering Pot crew prepared a tasty Borscht Soup. As always, an impressive group of volunteers gathered to prepare and deliver 130 quarts of soup.

We will be preparing soup on August 15 and August 22. Stop by to witness love in action and lend a hand. Email Julie Pierson if you are available to help on those dates.
Family Fun Bike Ride this Sunday

St. Brendan and Healthy Island Project are sponsoring a free community bike ride on Sunday afternoon, July 31, from our parking lot to Reach Beach. Check-in for the ride is 12:00 noon. The ride will start at 12:30 pm after registration and a bicycle check. There is no cost to participate. Click here for the press release about this event.

Performers from Broadway and the Metropolitan Opera will present songs from an original musical based on the life of opera singer Marian Anderson. One of the composers of the musical is Chelsea Davis, a friend of St. Brendan's who has sung at our services on several occasions. The production is in its final stages. Tax-deductible donations will help fund the next phase of the musical's development.

Scripture Notes
Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

In today’s liturgy, we are confronted with the radical shift in our values brought about by our union with Christ in baptism. In the gospel reading, Jesus is asked to settle a property dispute between two brothers. Instead, he warns against placing our highest value in material acquisition, for that value is a fleeting and uncertain one. Our highest value should be our relationship with God, which alone is permanent and certain.

In the first reading, we have the wise reflections of a person who found that spending one’s life on the accumulation of material goods is an empty project. It is “vanity and striving after wind.”

In the passage from Colossians, Paul describes the new way of living which belongs to those unified with Christ in baptism. As people who have put on the new nature, our behavior toward others is transformed; our relationships with others are no longer based on human values or differences; and our lives consist of joy, peace, forgiveness, and thanksgiving.

When we present to God the work of human hands in bread and wine and gifts of our material possessions, we are placing our lives into a new and transforming relationship with God. Our relationship toward the material world is likewise transformed. We are put right in our relationship with God, with others, with ourselves, and with the material world. Then we are sent out to live in that new relationship each day.
