From the Rector
Dear Parishioners and Friends,

What is your earliest memory? Mine is of the 4th of July, 1976 at age 2 1/2. This is mostly because in an effort to be extra-festive, the town had hung mannequins dressed in 18th century costumes from the lamp posts, something I still find horrifying.

Possibly the next (and certainly more vivid) memory is being put into my blanket sleepers and thrown into the back seat of our huge brown car with an entire grocery bag of popcorn and driving to the Douglas Avenue Drive-in to see Star Wars. I remember the clunky aluminum speaker hanging from the car window, and just the sheer excitement of it all. I was in the back seat, and Mom and Dad were up front along with sister Amy, who would be born later that fall. Those were truly simpler times.

Episcopalians have an interesting relationship with that film, often responding to "May the force be with you," with, "And also with you." There was even a short-lived YouTube series called "Father Vader," in which Darth Vader converts from the dark side to Anglicanism, and is ordained a priest. Somehow this does not seem to be too far from the realm of possibility, especially since he is one of the more famous residents of the Washington National Cathedral. He also seems to have a very ecumenical spirit, and has been spotted hanging out with Icelandic Lutherans. Click the links to see what I mean.

So I am thrilled that our next movie on the lawn at "St. Mary's Starlight Drive-in" will be the original Star Wars. I hope that you will embrace your inner-wookie and join us for an evening of galactic proportions!

Blessings,
Father Rick
