The late Peachtree City resident, Sergeant 1st Class Shawn P. McCloskey was killed in action on September 16, 2009, at the age of 33, when his vehicle was struck by an Improvised Explosive Device while conducting a mounted patrol in the Afghan city of Ghur Ghuri, in support of combat operations while serving with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). He was in his third deployment in Afghanistan.

Sergeant 1st Class McCloskey was born in Hudson, New York but grew up in Peachtree City and considered it his adopted hometown. Upon graduating from high school, Shawn went to work in construction, until January 2002, when he joined the Army to defend our freedom after the September 11th attacks.

In May 2004, Shawn earned the coveted “Green Beret” as a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant. His military education included, but was not limited to, courses in leadership, survival, evasion resistance and escape, airborne, jumpmaster, diving, and special operations. Sergeant First Class McCloskey was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Special Operations Diver Supervisor badge and the Special Forces Tab.

He is survived by his wife Jessica, who is the Director of Administration at Gold Star Teen Adventures, his children Katie and Collin, his parents Patrick and Kathryn, and his sister, who still lives here in Fayette County.

Peachtree City remembers and appreciates our Hometown Hero, Sergeant 1st Class Shawn P. McCloskey, who paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom. We would also like to thank his Gold Star family for raising such a truly remarkable man.

CAF Airbase Georgia to Recognize Memorial Day with Hangar Open House May 30

PEACHTREE CITY, GA, May 18, 2022 – The Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Airbase Georgia will honor the memory of America’s servicemen and women with an open house on May 30 at its hangar, 1200 Echo Ct., Peachtree City, Ga. The hangar adjoins Atlanta Regional Airport – Falcon Field. The open house will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature tours of the Airbase’s seven operating WWII era aircraft, tours of the maintenance shop and additional tabletop displays and exhibits.

“We are a working museum,” said Airbase Leader Joel Perkins. “Our aircraft are maintained and upgraded constantly, and we also offer the chance to see a restored Link Trainer and a PT-17 Stearman biplane trainer in the midst of restoration.

“This open house is our way of honoring all men and women who have been lost in service to our country, including those of “The Greatest Generation” who gave all to help win WWII,” Perkins said.
