Chief CLT Mercedes Acosta Receives 2022 Godfrey Cheeping CLT Service Award
Mercedes Acosta, chief College Laboratory Technician (CLT), has been selected as LaGuardia’s 2022 Godfrey Cheeping CLT Service Award recipient. The annual award is given to a LaGuardia CLT who demonstrates high standards and dedication. Accolades shared by Mercedes’ peers who nominated her for this honor included, “Ms. Acosta is an institution not only in the Computer Science program but in the Math, Engineering, and Computer Science Department, which she joined in 2010. She is always taking care of faculty and staff, collaborating with office assistants to make sure that we all have our supplies and anything we may need on daily teaching practice.” Another nominator wrote, “Mercedes’ kindness and outreach often remind me of the importance of building meaningful relationships with colleagues across various areas and with our CLTs, who work tirelessly, so our students don't feel any disruption in their learning.” Mercedes recently marked 40 years at LaGuardia; she joined in 1982 as a full-time CLT. Library Construction Begins This Month, Services Remain Available
Construction on the second floor of the Library will start this month, in phases, to remove and replace the storefront frames and glass currently secured by white mesh netting. Once completed, all areas of the Library’s second floor can be safely occupied. The Library will remain open throughout the project, however, some areas may be closed-off or noisier than usual. The Library may also relocate or adjust services to accommodate construction needs. Please use the Library’s in-person, phone, email, or chat Ask a Librarian service to answer questions about what services or spaces may, or may not, be available; see website for details. The college community can call the Facilities Office at x5575 to discuss any issues or concerns with construction activities. We apologize for the disruption and inconvenience, but look forward to sharing a safer, more beautiful Library with everyone in Spring 2023. Thank you for your patience while we improve our campus.

Faculty Spotlight: Steven Ovadia
Steven Ovadia joined the faculty of LaGuardia’s Library in 2004. He describes himself as a “librarian by day and a writer obsessed with blues music and Linux [a free, open-source operating system used by Android phones and tables, Chromebooks, and other personal devices] by night.” When asked to describe his work, he responded, “I spend my days supervising the acquisition and organization of book and ebook purchases as professor/coordinator of Technical Services at LaGuardia’s Library. After years in library administration and web services, I’m energized by working with the physical collection, while also learning how to integrate everything, print and electronic, into our discovery layer, where patrons can search for and find what they need.” Beyond academia, Professor Ovadia writes extensively about blues artists, putting the spotlight on their songwriting skills. His writing is available on his Working Mojo website and has been published in the music publications No Depression, Blues Rock Review, and Blues Blast Magazine.
