Sunapee Happenings
Last week, Stephanie Wheeler’s awesome autumn sunset photograph was featured... this week, it’s the “morning after” sunrise Vimeo from Peter Bloch. We are grateful to each for sharing.
Feeling just a tad privileged and enormously grateful as the Lake Sunapee region’s summer has struck just about the right balance of sun-heated days, cool mornings and evenings with spectacular sunrises and sunsets... tho a bit more rain would be welcome to keep things green. All in all… a glorious summer.
Cue the Music
Tonight: “Kid Pinky & His Restless Knights” will be playing the blues on the Ben Mere Bandstand in Sunapee Harbor.
Friday, August 26th: The Livery in Sunapee Harbor is the place for Jazz on a summer evening, with Dan Moretti and the JOSA Ensemble.
Dan’s love of all styles of jazz has contributed to his performances in straight-ahead jazz as-well-as Latin, funk and soul. This is evident throughout his current collection of 19 solo recordings. Dan Moretti Website

Next Week:
Sunday, August 28: “Deep Blue C” at the Fells 5:00-7:00pm
A studio orchestra is made up of woodwinds, brass, percussion, and strings as in a symphony orchestra. It also includes a rhythm section of guitar, bass guitar, keyboards and drum set as in a jazz combo or show orchestra. It often includes vocalists as well. Traditionally studio orchestras were assembled by large recording houses (MGM) or in the film industry to enhance the effect of a movie (film scoring) and to extract the most poignant details in the composer’s music. “Doc” Vose followed his dream to spread this musical excitement and his deep love and respect for the musical contributions of composer Burt Bacharach and lyricist Hal David by assembling his own Deep Blue “C” Studio Orchestra, 17 members including vocals. The DB “C” concerts are elegant and classy. You will find our concerts to be unique and memorable, ingredients that are always present. We encourage you to please bring your own picnic to enjoy as you listen to the music. $35 per person. Registration is required as space is limited. Visit our website or call the office to register 603-763-4789 x3. John Hay Estate at The Fells, www.thefells.org.
Wednesday, August 31: “One Night of Queen” at the Lebanon Opera House.
Gary Mullen & The Works are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their world-renowned One Night of Queen live concert experience.

The band (featuring Gary Mullen on vocals, David Brockett on guitar, Billy Moffat on bass, Malcolm Gentles on keyboards, and Jon Halliwell on drums) will have you dancing in the aisles during their two-hour extravaganza which pays tribute to Queen’s iconic stage theatrics, showmanship, and timeless music.

In 2000, Gary Mullen won the Granada TV program Stars in Their Eyes with his performance as Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury. Mullen’s embodiment of Mercury resulted in him setting the record for the show’s all-time number of votes.

For two decades, Gary Mullen & The Works have performed to sold-out audiences around the world, playing more than 2,500 live shows to audiences in over 20 countries around the globe. One Night of Queen has played at London’s Hyde Park (twice) as a featured attraction during the prestigious BBC Proms concert series in front of enthusiastic crowds of over 40,000 people.

Out & About Events
August 27th: "Apple Pie Crafts Fair" is Saturday on the Newport Common. 9-3. Rain or Shine. Free admission.

Bakers will soon be in the kitchen preparing their 'tried and true' and possibly some new, apple pie recipes to compete for the prizes at Saturday’s “Apple Pie Festival” in Newport.
August 29th: Civil War Soldiers Quilts… Newbury.
We have another event in partnership with the Center Meeting House on Monday August 29th at 7pm. Civil War Soldiers Quilts will be presented by Pamela Weeks, and is a NH Humanities to Go Presentation. Quilts made for use by soldiers during the Civil War are very rare-only twenty are known to exist, and Pam Weeks has studied most of them in person. This illustrated lecture outlines the origins of the U. S. Sanitary Commission at the beginning of the Civil War and examines the roles women played on the home front, and as nurses. The stories of fourteen actual Civil War soldiers’ quilts will be highlighted in this program. Learn More

Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion is a unique interactive experience with full-size machines, constructed after an in-depth study of da Vinci’s designs by a group of scientists and skilled craftsmen. The materials used to create these machine replicas are the same items available during the Renaissance and the ones proposed by da Vinci himself.

Leonardo da Vinci, the celebrated thinker of the Renaissance, is widely considered to be a leading figure of invention and creativity. His ideas have informed and inspired generations of engineers, architects, and artists, and his designs are the precursors of many modern machines and devices, including the glider, parachute, bicycle, and helicopter.

Today, da Vinci’s legacy of innovation is studied in the machines, drawings, and designs he left for us to construct and decode. Now, through Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion, Montshire visitors will have the chance to see the early forms of da Vinci’s machines up close, touch them, and set them in motion during this renowned international exhibition’s first visit to Northern New England. For the sake of the lake, minimize your wake!

The impacts from motorized watercrafts can have a multitude of negative influences on water clarity, water quality, the shoreline, and aquatic plants and wildlife. The greatest impacts are observed and noted in shallow water and near-shore areas. The best way to enjoy the lake AND be a good steward is to minimize the size and intensity of the waves hitting the shore. Large wave boats are not required to be 500' from shore, but this new study shows that in order to prevent damage to the shoreline, boats should be.
Lake Sunapee is enjoyed by many different people in a variety of ways - fishing, swimming, paddle boarding, sailing as well as skiing and wave/wake surfing - not to mention it is home to a wide variety of fish, plants and wildlife. Please be mindful and alert to all the activity and the wave action of your boat when out on the water.
Protect what you love.
