GOOD SAM Back to School program participants will receive two food boxes during the summer months and a backpack for each registered child attending school in August.
Food Box Distribution 2 & Backpacks - July 21-22, 2023
Since we are waiting to hear from Good Sam what "new" food items we are to collect, in the meantime you can still bring school supplies. As soon as we know about the canned items, we'll let you know.
We continue to collect cans of these items through July 17 for food box 2. Items can be placed in the big container located in the side entry hall.
For backpacks - Good Samaritan Ministries needs the following unused / new items for our Back to School Program: 1″ hard cover binders; Loose leaf paper (college and wide rule); Black/blue ball point pens; Red ball point pens; 24-count crayon packs; 12-ct colored pencils; #2 pencils; Highlighters; Glue sticks; 12″ rulers. The ministry strongly recommends choosing one or two items to focus your collection drive.

Bees, the poster animals for the plight of declining pollinators, are much beloved by the public. Their close cousins, the wasps, however, elicit opposite feelings. Both feared and loathed, wasps are more likely to be swatted or sprayed with poison than nurtured in a wildlife garden with "wasp-friendly" plants. Nevertheless, scientists who study wasps say it's time the insects got an image makeover. "Despite their poor public image, wasps are incredibly important for the world's economy and ecosystems," writes biologist Seirian Sumner. "Without them, the planet would be pest-ridden to biblical proportions and have much-reduced biodiversity."
There is widespread ignorance about the role wasps play in ecosystems. Wasps are disliked, she says, because a handful of species sting. Bees also sting, but the public tolerates that because they pollinate. Wasps are also pollinators, and they do much more, she points out. Their most important role is regulating populations of insects and other arthropods such as mites and spiders. They target a wide range of insects, including many crop-devouring pests such as aphids, white flies, cabbage loopers, and brown marmorated stink bugs. "They are nature's pest controllers," says Sumner (GSN #155)

A History of God: The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam
By Karen Armstrong
(201.4/ARM)
"An admirable and impressive work of synthesis that will give insight and satisfaction to thousands of lay readers," a Washington Post reviewer wrote of this book.
In this stunningly intelligent book, Karen Armstrong, one of Britain's foremost commentators on religious affairs, traces the history of how men and women have perceived and experienced God, from the time of Abraham to the present. From classical philosophy and medieval mysticism to the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and the modern age of skepticism, Karen Armstrong performs the near miracle of distilling the intellectual history of monotheism into one superbly readable volume, destined to take its place as a classic.
