The Good Stuff: Meet Your 2022
Miss Lassen County Contestants
By Shelley Bennett

Before I introduce the Miss Lassen contestants, I have to say Happy Anniversary to my mom and dad, Rhonda and Vernon Templeton.

Fifty-three years ago today they got married and together they have raised a family, grown a business, and influenced hundreds of local children through coaching, library time, Campfire girls, Boy Scouts, and other activities.

I’m sure it wasn’t always easy and I am thankful for everything you have done for me.
Wednesday is pageant night and I know you are wanting to see this year’s lovely young ladies.

These amazing photos were taken by Tressa Guess of Wild and Free Photography at the Susanville Municipal Airport. A big thank you to Steve, BJ, Paul, Bill, and Doc Blevins for their help with the shoot. It was a beautifully tranquil location and we enjoyed the evening.

Photofeature: 4H and FFA Members Spread the Word About Jr. Livestock Auction

The 2022 Lassen County Fair kicks off this week and 4H and FFA members from clubs all over the valley visited local businesses last week, spreading the word about the July 24th, Jr. Livestock Auction.

It’s an annual tradition and a true sign that the fair is right around the corner. Club members, parents and advisers first gather at Memorial Park for pictures and to assign sections of town to different groups who then head out to hang posters in business windows up and down Main Street.

The Jr. Livestock Auction

“The Junior Livestock Auction is one of the most important part of a livestock exhibitor’s experience,” explains Lassen County Fair Manager Kaitlyn Midgely, “This is when the exhibitor gets to see all of their hard work pay off in the sale ring.”

“Raising these animals has taught these kids many useful life lessons which include responsibility, ownership, and dedication to a project and team.”

Just after dawn on Sunday of the fair 4H and FFA exhibitors will make their way to the judging pavilion at the fairgrounds, ending months of grooming, training, feeding, conditioning and care of their prized animals, to be sold at the fair’s annual auction.

Jr. Livestock exhibitors purchase their market animals in the Fall or Spring depending on species and are responsible for feeding, grooming and taking care of their animal. They are also responsible for calculating their average daily gain (how many pounds they need to gain per day) to produce the best quality meat product for the buyer.

The 4H and FFA kids spend the week at the fair, taking care of their animals, showing their animals and making friendships and connections that can become lifelong.

After a long hot week of washing, grooming and showing, the Jr. Livestock Auction is where the kids will sell their animals.

The 4H and FFA Junior Livestock Auction will be held Sunday morning in the judging pavilion at the fairgrounds. Buyer registration and a good morning social begin at 7:30. The auction begins at 8:30.

“We would love to see the community come out and show these kids that hard work really does pay off. We hope to see everyone at the Junior Livestock Sale Sunday July 24th!”
The 2022 Lassen County Fair kicks off this week with five days of ‘Cowboy Boots and Country Roots’ at the fairgrounds in Susanville and we are giving away tickets to four big grandstand shows.

Sparks Rain On Town As
Blazes Rage In Timber

Fire Burns Within Three Miles of Lassen County Lumber Town, 400 in Fight

Mill Property, County Hospital Endangered
Wingfield Ranch, Other Rich Holdings in Path of Devastating Fire

July 19, 1924

Sparks from a forest fire raging three miles from Susanville today endangered approximately 80 million feet of cured lumber, county buildings and other property within the town today. Throughout the day the county hospital was sprinkled with water constantly to protect the building. The lumber yards of the two large companies were patrolled to guard against fire resulting from the falling sparks.

Driven before a brisk west wind, the flames burned an area of about eight square miles and were uncontrolled tonight.

Valuable timber lands, ranches and livestock are in the path of the fire.

Four hundred men were called from the town to battle the blaze when it was noticed at 11 o’clock this morning. They continued their efforts to check it tonight.
A slackening of the wind this evening gave a respite to those who were protecting the town.

Provisions were sent from Susanville tonight for the firefighters on the fire line.

The fire is in government timber and three ridges have been burned over tonight, destroying valuable trees.

Logging equipment is in momentary danger and the Wingfield ranch not the property of the Lassen Lumber and Box company, on which is much thoroughbred stock seem doomed unless the fire is halted or the direction of the wind changes. Tonight the fire is within four miles of the ranch.

Mayfields at the edge of Susanville presents an added hazard to the lumber store here. Water wagons have been stationed at various points.

Besides the lumber yards and the county buildings, the Ramsey and Ridenour ranches are said to be threatened by the fire.

Dynamite stored by the county at the outskirts of Susanville was removed today due to fear of a possible explosion should the fire reach it.

The fire at Lassen (Janesville) which threatened the town yesterday was reported extinguished tonight.
