Sure YOU can hit ANY word you WANT. But the client doesn’t care which words you want to hit. They care if you hit the words they want you to hit.

Further the client shouldn’t have to tell you which words they want hit (well, other than in a few rare circumstances). It’s very obvious IF you know a few things.

To Unnatural Reads

Weird: Clients want voice actors to sound natural. Yet they don’t always make it easy… 

To begin with, they give you a script written in someone else’s words, with someone else’s feelings, with someone else’s intent. They often redact keywords, such as the client name and product, which would help you know what you’re talking about. Typically they don’t furnish what the visuals will be, nor give any indication of the sound track.

To top it off, the written voice direction they provide is often non-specific (“sound natural. not announcer.”), or ambiguous (“sound energetic. but not too energetic, as you should sound easy going with a nice calm tone.”), or downright confusing (“sound blue.”).

But you have to sound natural. And there are a few ways that make it super simple to do that … even with a crazy challenging script.
