Now is the Time Study Series
Begins Tonight!
|
We invite you to be with us online on Wednesday evenings beginning August 17 and continuing through September 14, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. PDT/4:00-6:00 p.m. HST for our “Now is the Time" Study Series being facilitated by members of the Pacifica Synod Anti-Racism Team. This study series is for Pacifica Synod rostered leaders and lay persons interested in promoting racial justice within their communities, congregations and throughout the ELCA.
During our time together we'll journey together in community as we wrestle with the content and meaning of the “Declaration of the ELCA to People of African Descent” and its accompanying explanation which was adopted by the ELCA Churchwide Council in 2019. We will provide tools and resources for participants to lead this study series in their own congregations as they feel comfortable. During our sessions, there will be time for small group conversations and learning.
The “Now is the Time" Study Series and guide provide an avenue for the realization, self-examination and accountability required to “apologize to people of African descent for the [church's] complicity in slavery and its enduring legacy of racism in the United States and globally.”

Boundary Workshop for Rostered Leaders

One of the ways that we support one another is to encourage and promote responsible boundaries for ourselves and our colleagues.
Why Should I attend a Boundary Workshop?
Synod policy requires rostered ministers to participate in a Basic Boundary Workshop every three years that emphasizes the church's expectations for their professional ethics, finances, social media use and prevention of sexual misconduct. The synod considers racial justice a necessary part of healthy boundaries. You must be present for the entire boundaries workshop to receive your certificate of completion.
Registration for this event is required in advance using the button below and will close on October 10th or when we reach a threshold of 30 participants. The cost for the workshop is $20.00 which includes lunch. If you have questions, including as to when you last participated in a boundary workshop, please contact Rev. As we will be working in small groups please be aware of caring for your own health if you are in high risk category and bring a mask. For public synod events, attendees are required to provide either proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a negative test within 72 hours of their arrival at the event. This policy is subject to updated public health guidance.

Evangelism doesn’t have to mean handing out pamphlets or cornering strangers at the mall. Pastor Jennifer Garcia, Associate Pastor of First Lutheran in Fullerton and a member of the Pacifica Synod Evangelism Team, has created a Bible study curriculum for Pacifica Synod congregations to use in their setting about sharing our faith stories in a more relational way.

Pacifica Synod has invested in training coaches to work with rostered and lay leaders one-on-one or in groups. A coach's role is to support leaders in naming challenging issues and identifying constructive responses to them.

Hymn Society Presents High Award
to Deacon Randall Sensmeier
|
Randall Sensmeier, organist/congregational musician at San Marcos Lutheran since 2017, received the highest honor granted by the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada at their July 2022, annual conference in Washington, D.C.
For 30 years Randy served as Editor for GIA, one of the leading publishers of congregational song. This role put him in position to discover new composers and authors, to encourage and advise them, and to champion their work. In awarding him the title Fellow, the Society recognized the valuable and unique contribution he has made to ecumenical hymnody.
Randy was introduced by hymn writer, Adam Tice, who noted that Randy is widely published as a composer in his own right "with tunes ranging from rugged angularity to awe-struck beauty."
In August of 2021, San Marcos Lutheran celebrated with Randy his 50 years as a Deacon in the Lutheran Church.

Matthew 25 Fund Grant
Application Period Now Open!
|
The application period for the Pacifica Synod Matthew 25 Fund is now open! The purpose of this fund is to honor Christ as he spoke in Matthew 25:35-40. Jerry and Lynda Engelhardt established this fund through a strong desire to help people as in the verse.
The primary criteria for making awards shall be Matthew 25:35-40. A secondary criterion shall be to evaluate if the proposed project will help establish or maintain congregational outreach and unity as in the spirit of the verse.
Preference will be given to congregations in the Pacifica Synod of ELCA. Consideration may be given to other Christian organizations with proven responsible management.

The deadline for applications is October 15, 2022.
Grants awards will be distributed by December 31, 2022.

Global Engagement Mission (GEM) Fund Grant
Application Period Now Open!
|
The application period for the 2022 Global Engagement Mission (GEM) Fund Grants is now open. The goals of the fund are:
- To assist congregations of the Pacifica Synod in their Global Mission efforts;
- To initiate and/or continue direct support of present and future Companion Synods of the Pacifica Synod;
- To share in ministry with God's people as we strive together for a lasting world peace.
Distribution of funds may be given to increase awareness of global mission work and to fund domestic and/or foreign projects related to Pacifica Companion Synod(s) and Lutheran partners and to provide assistance for travel expenses related to the fund's stated goals.
Requirements of the grant may be found the 2022 GEM Grant Fund application. Download and complete the application and submit it along with a one-page description of the project/program and how the funds will be used. Be specific as to how the project/program meets the goals of this grant and the outcomes anticipated.
The maximum amount that can be requested is $3,000. The application deadline is September 15, 2022. The completed application and description may be returned by mail or email using the instructions provided on the application.
Please note: 2021 GEM Grant Fund recipients MUST have filed the required reporting (as described in the letter sent with your reward) before applying for a 2022 grant.

Job Opening: Communications Director
Southwest California & Pacifica Synods
|
The Communications Director will work in collaboration with the bishops of the Southwest California Synod and the Pacifica Synod to envision, create, and manage a comprehensive communications program for both synods. This program will include internal and external communications as well as public relations with local and national media outlets. The Communications Director is a full-time position split equally between the two synods and will report directly to the synod bishops.
Responsibilities include website creation and maintenance; social media content creation; direct communications with congregations and rostered leaders; public relations; crisis communications strategy and implementation; promotion of conferences, workshops and assemblies held by the synods; online and in-person registrations for events within each synod; coordinating communications between the ELCA national church and synods; and branding and marketing analysis. The salary range for this position is $58,240 - $70,000, depending on experience and education. In addition, health care insurance and an employer contribution to a retirement account will be included. The position starts with two weeks paid vacation per year, increasing to three weeks after five years of employment.

ELCA World Hunger’s Global Farm Challenge is well underway! Your congregation or youth group may already be hosting activities and collecting funds for the challenge. We want to remind you of the resources available and let you know that, even if you haven’t started yet, it’s not too late to begin!
The goal of the Global Farm Challenge is to equip communities in the United States and around the world with livestock, seeds, tools and training to turn a hungry season into a hopeful one. This is an important part of Christ’s call to our church. And thanks to generous donors, all gifts to the challenge will be matched — dollar for dollar — until we reach $525,000!

Ukraine & Eastern Europe Crisis Response |

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine on Feb. 24, millions of people have fled the country and are seeking refuge in neighboring countries including Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. There are major humanitarian concerns for both internally displaced people and refugees. Many of these Ukrainians fleeing their homes need shelter and such basic necessities as food, water and toiletries. Care for people also includes pastoral and psychological support to address the trauma they’ve endured.
There are a number of ways that you can support relief efforts through your financial gifts. Below are some of the Lutheran organizations involved in these efforts.
Lutheran Disaster Response
Lutheran Disaster Response is accompanying our companions in Ukraine, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, as well as such ecumenical partners as Lutheran World Federation and Church World Service, in their humanitarian responses to the crisis. These partners provide refugees with immediate support and supplies such as food, blankets, water and hygiene kits. Click here to learn more.

Excellence in Leadership Cohort 2022
Leadership for Lay & Rostered Leaders
|
“It’s not easy to be the church these days”. This is a common sentiment in mainline Christian denominations. We know there is a need for hope and grace and the power of the gospel, but the ways of communicating that and the ways of being church in the world are shifting beneath our feet. How much more has this become true in the 2 years as we have attempted to negotiate the added challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic?
In response to this truth and the desire to raise up courageous, resilient, and faithful leaders, the Rocky Mountain Synod, ELCA has created a leadership initiative called Excellence in Leadership. It is an 18-month investment, with classes meeting 1-2 times per month, which will provide tools and resources to last a lifetime.
This initiative is grounded in authentically claiming our identities as individuals and as church. By engaging deeply in the studies of adaptive leadership, vulnerability, emotional intelligence, family systems, Theory U, and spiritual practices, we will be stepping forward to meet the future boldly. The Rocky Mountain Synod is inviting participants from all regions and walks of life – lay or rostered, young or old. That includes you!
During the time in the pandemic, Excellence in Leadership began offering online cohorts. This September they will begin two new online cohorts, one on Monday morning (9am-12pm MT/8-11am PT) and one on Tuesday evening (6-9pm MT/5-8pm PT).
Truly this initiative is helpful for not only congregations, but for all people who wish to improve their leadership skills and increase their capacity for emotional intelligence. Whether you would like to do it as an individual or would like to participate as a group, this initiative is for you.
Pastor Jennifer Shaw (St. John's, Palm Desert) shares about Excellence in Leadership: "The mission of Excellence in Leadership is to develop "courage, resilient, faithful leaders" by drawing on several highly regarded leadership frameworks and grounding them in Christ-centered theology and spirituality. Larger cohorts and smaller groups offer supportive environments to grow together and to become more mature, healthy, and effective leaders in the community of Christ. This was my experience as a participant in EiL, and I look forward to sharing this experience as a member of the EiL Training Team."
We don't know exactly what the future holds, but we do know that it begins with each personal journey toward emotional and spiritual wholeness. Let’s embark on this journey together.

Contemplative Action Cohorts Forming Now! |
Thriving Leadership Formation (TLF) is currently recruiting leaders and participants for the next round of Contemplative Action Cohorts – open to all rostered and non-rostered leaders in the 11 Synods of Regions 1 and 2. Watch this video to hear from those who have found community and meaning through their Cohort.
The goal of the Contemplative Action Cohorts is to foster and equip spiritual leaders for new models of ministry and church. These small groups are communities of practice, learning and friendship… places for you and others to form meaningful relationships built on trust.

TLF is also seeking individuals to serve as Cohort Leaders for both Synod and At Large groups. Each leader will receive a $2,000 stipend. Audience/For whom: Anybody in the ELCA, specifically interested in connecting with other folks building or working at a synod, campus or congregational anti-racist team.
This is a follow up series to the ELCA European Descent Lutheran Association for Racial Justice (EDLARJ) webinar around How to Build a Congregation, Synod and/or Campus Anti-Racism team. As with any team, having shared goals is really important for doing effective work. The team should decide what their function will be by identifying their goals. Each racial justice team is unique to a specific congregation and community context. The goals of the team should be defined keeping that in mind. The main areas that a team focuses on falls into three areas: internal team goals, congregational goals, and community goals.

Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Orange would like to fill the position of a part time Organist/Pianist. The salary is $14K per year and has a very minimal time requirement (Sundays/Wednesdays). Applicants must be adept at the piano and organ, a proficient sight reader, capable of improvisation, and skilled at accompanying. Proficiency in performing of a wide range of music including classical, gospel, contemporary styles, and secular music is necessary. An extensive knowledge of organ and piano repertoire is required. A working knowledge of Lutheran liturgy and worship and a theological understanding of church music is strongly recommended. The ability to communicate well and in a friendly manner with fellow staff members and the congregation is a must.

2022 Addiction & Faith Conference
October 2022

The Oct. 6-8th Addiction & Faith Conference is hosted by the Center of Addiction & Faith. It will be at the Airport Hilton in Bloomington, MN. It is a hybrid conference; folks can register to attend the conference in person or register to attend main events of the conference virtually.
This year there will also be a pre-conference event associated with the conference. It is Oct. 4-6th for recovering clergy and for seminarians; it is hosted by the Fellowship of Recovering Lutheran Clergy (FRLC). It will be at the Airport Hilton and the nearby Minnesota Valley Wildlife Refuge.
The A&F Conference is for everyone including clergy & lay, healthcare professionals, people in recovery, those who love people in recovery, those affected by persons with addiction, youth leaders, addiction specialists. It’s for everyone. Registration may be found on the conference website www.addictionandfaithconference.com. Early Bird rates are good through August 31st.

Mediation Skills Training Institute

You are invited to attend Mediation Skills Training Institute for Church Leaders, a 5-day event that helps participants deal more effectively with interpersonal, congregational, and other forms of group conflict. The next in-person session is on November 14-18, 2022 at the beautiful Franciscan Renewal Center in Scottsdale, AZ. The next online session will be March 13-17, 2023. Registration is now underway at https://lmpeacecenter.org/all-events/.
We would also like to introduce our new one-day event called Restorative Conversations. Devon Miller, LMPC Associate Director and the author and facilitator of this course, describes it this way: Restorative conversations are useful when working through difficult or polarizing topics, processing shared painful experiences, building community, and dealing with certain levels of conflict in the church setting. The workshop will benefit all levels of leadership including pastors, lay leaders, youth leaders, and Sunday school teachers. Three sessions of this workshop have been scheduled for next year: Feb. 23, May 23, and Nov. 2, 2023.

Stephen Ministry Bridge Leader's Training Course
Synod Scholarships Available
|
Stephen Ministries St. Louis is now training caring ministry leaders through a live, interactive online training experience called the Bridge Leader’s Training Course (BLTC). This event fully trains Stephen Leaders—the pastors, church staff, and lay leaders who begin and lead Stephen Ministry in their congregation.
The BLTC draws on newly redesigned and updated Stephen Ministry resources to equip participants with the skills and know-how to lead all aspects of their congregation’s Stephen Ministry. This includes training a team of congregation members as lay caregivers (called Stephen Ministers), matching them with hurting people in the congregation and community, and offering ongoing guidance and support to Stephen Ministers as they provide one-to-one, Christ-centered care to people experiencing a wide range of life difficulties.
Did you know that the Pacifica Synod offers scholarships for lay persons attending Stephen Ministries training? These are available through the Cathryn Wright Fund. More information about the scholarship and the application to apply may be found on our synod website here.

- For the family and friends of the Rev. George Falk.
- For Larry Dodson (Pacifica Synod Council member).
- For Matt Deming, son of Deacon Phil Deming.
- For the people of Ukraine, Russia and neighboring countries affected by this violent conflict.
- For the Afghan people, our allies, and vulnerable populations in the midst of this humanitarian disaster.
- For the people of Haiti in the face of earthquakes, tropical storms and political unrest.
- Those affected by wildfires, floods, tropical storms and other natural disasters, as well as emergency personnel responding to these situations.

- For peace in Palestine and Israel and for those who have lost loved ones and their homes due to violence and unrest.

- Those affected with the COVID-19 virus and those who have lost loved ones.
- Our healthcare providers, first responders and all who continue to care for those battling COVID-19.
In our synod e-newsletter, prayer requests may be shared for our synod's rostered ministers, spouses, key lay leaders and congregations.
Prayer requests included are subject to the following guidelines:
- Only the names of those to be prayed for will be included in our communications. Additional information (with permission) may be shared with the bishop or synod staff, but will not be publicized.

Those being prayed for must have provided the requester with explicit permission for their names to be shared with the synod.
- Names will remain in the synod communications for one month, unless we are notified by the Conference Prayer Coordinator to extend the request.
- Prayers MUST be added through your Conference Prayer Coordinator, who will submit the prayers to the synod office for distribution.
