Preparing for Growing Old Series FREE @ Still Waters Adult Day Center
Thanks to everyone who joined us last month with the Indiana School of Medicine. We learned and discovered new things, met new people, and developed a sense of community. As we get older, we need to build a support network to help us along the way. Join us April 8th, 10-11am, as the Alzheimer's Association covers topics about healthy eating, exercise, sleep and socializing. Then join Worthy by Nature from 11am-noon as you learn to take care of yourself as you sit back, relax, and create your own candle. Anjelica, owner of Worthy by Nature, began hosting candle workshops and educating individuals on how to take care of themselves mentally, and physically through natural product creations and utilizing coping skills. Today Worthy by Nature has educated over 100 individuals on the importance of mental health and self-care. Their mission is to promote self - care through all areas of wellness and spread the message that we do not earn our worth, we are simply born with it. We are Worthy by Nature.

Caregiver Spotlight- Shanda and Ms. Lucy

Shanda learned her mother, Ms. Lucy, had dementia in 2018. Although it was tough for Shanda to hear, she knew it was time for her to support her mom through this disease and make sure she enjoyed her quality of life from that day forward. Shanda and her husband decided to move her mother in with them. It was the best decision they have ever made to become her mother’s caregivers. Ms. Lucy brings so much joy and it is evident that the feeling is mutual. With Shanda and her husband working full time, she wanted to find a community where her mother could enjoy herself in the company of people her age that share similar diagnosis. It was very important for her to find a place that made her mom feel comfortable. We were blessed that they chose Still Waters. Ms. Lucy has always enjoyed socializing and has a love for music. She became family immediately at Still Waters. It was a perfect fit for all of us! Knowing a loved one is at a safe and loving space during the day takes so much anxiety off Shanda. As Shanda expressed it allows her to be able to work in peace. Ms. Lucy is always staying busy at the center with arts, music, trivia, bingo, coloring, and so much more. Whenever the music is on, we know Ms. Lucy will be dancing! Even on the weekends Ms. Lucy asks about her friends at the center. Shanda loves to see her mom having fun with her friends again!
Being a caregiver is difficult and challenging, but Shanda makes being a caregiver so carefree. Every day Shanda brings Ms. Lucy to Still Waters they both have a huge smile on their face. As Shanda says, “Being a caregiver requires love and sacrifice. It isn’t always easy but being able to wake up every morning and see my mother’s beautiful face as she pushes through each day makes it all worthwhile.” Thanks Shanda and all the other caregivers for what you do!
Spring is the time for new beginnings
Who doesn’t love spring? This is the time nature reclaims its vibrant colors and fragrant scents. It’s time to drop the coats, open all doors, and go meet the sun.
Spring is the time of new beginnings, characterized by blooming flowers, the awakening of animals from hibernation to nest and reproduce, the migration of birds towards warmer climates, and it is the planting season.
As the season of spring overflows with rebirth, renewal, and love we too are seeing the dormant winter sprout afresh with newness at the center.
We currently have 30 guests registered. We have seen 4 new enrolled in the last month. We are renewed with building our intergenerational programming with bringing in McKenzie CNA students, Butler neuroscience students, UINDY music therapist, IUPUI art therapist, WGU nursing students, young violinists from the church, and CUMNS preschool students. We were blessed to have received a grant from SYPF to offer 3 days a week of music and arts with our guests and CUMNS camp from June-July.
We are loved by all the volunteers that spend time at the center. Our volunteers bring their time, talent and treasures to the center! Still Waters would not be the amazing place without our volunteers. They bring the love and enthusiasm to our guests!
Volunteering at all ages!
There are many reasons why seniors should stay engaged in their communities even after retirement. Some ways volunteering can make a difference is by preventing isolation and reducing symptoms of depression, it makes you feel like you have more time and money, it helps improve intergenerational relationships, it helps keep you active longer, and it promotes mental health and may help prevent dementia.
That is why our guests at the center love to support other organizations and volunteer their time also! This month the guests were hard at work making sure the Easter eggs for the upcoming Easter egg hunt are ready for the 100's of children on April 1st!

If you are looking for a place to bring your children or grandchildren, come join us at the church on April 1st at 10am. Open to any child 12 and younger!

Tori has spent the school year with us as she has developed amazing relationships with the guests. She has offered individual and group therapy sessions with our guests over the last 9 months. She has used art to help improve our guests cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, and increase social skills. Help us wish her well in all her future endeavors! She will be missed at Still Waters.

Caregiver Support Group, April 12 and 26th, Castleton United Methodist Church
9:30-10:30am OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

A Caregiver support group for those providing care to loved ones with age related disorders/diagnosis. It is a safe and confidential place to share experiences, listen, learn, and reflect. This is open to anyone providing support to an aged loved one. Anyone is welcome to attend at no cost.
This beautiful gift of devotion to another human being often results in self-neglect. When we can access and honor our own feelings and needs, share similar experiences with others, and discover the lessons along our paths, we return to our loved ones strengthened and replenished.
Thanks to our sponsors and volunteers!
