ISSUE NO. 312 / July 27, 2022
Sunapee Happenings
Artist: Debbie Campbell
With the sands of July almost gone, and the August clock ticking, predicting the weather is like Russian Roulette or a flip of a coin. There's an intermittent deluge punctuated by hail one day and the next, it’s too hot to move, the breeze forgets us and "you could cut the air with a knife", as they say down south. Our theme song could be Cole Porter’s “It’s Too Darn Hot”. But this is New England… someone please tell the weatherman.
Cue the Music
Tonight at 6:30. The Ben Mere Bandstand in Sunapee Harbor will ring out with the distinctive sounds of the John Sullivan Band.
Tomorrow in Newbury: Folk & Pop Rock by Pete Kilapatrick.
Then on Friday Night at The Livery in Sunapee, the "OCCASIONAL JUG BAND" returns by popular demand for a fun filled concert of traditional American Roots music, Folk, Blues, Fiddle Tunes and Cajun with an irresistible Ragtime twist! All played on guitar, harmonica, fiddle, banjo, and of course… washboard & jug!

Next week: Celtic music by the Grammy & Emmy nominated Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki Trio takes the Livery Stage. The Music will be preceded by a New Hampshire Humanities Pre-concert Program talk by Jordan T-W on the Origins of Traditional Irish Music.

Sunapee Heritage Alliance is pleased to announce a New Hampshire Humanities event on Friday, August 5th at 6:00pm.

Join us at The Livery while Jordan Tirrell-Wysocki uses traditional music to relay some of the adventures, misadventures, and emotions experienced by Irish emigrants. The focus is on songs about leaving Ireland. The presenter discusses the historical context of these songs, interspersing their stories with tunes from Ireland that made their way into New England’s musical repertoire, played on his fiddle or guitar.

This event - made possible by a grant from New Hampshire Humanities - is FREE and open to the public.

At 7:30 - following his talk, Jordan, and the rest of his trio, will be performing live at The Livery. Tickets for his concert are $20 and are available for sale, now, at thelivery.org/tickets/ or at the door.

Don't Call Them Tourists
By MARK OKRANT, InDepthNH.org

It is a little-known fact that service exports account for more than seventy percent of US jobs, with travel and transportation earning more than 230 billion dollars annually.

Here in New Hampshire, total direct traveler spending exceeds five billion dollars; and food preparation and service alone contribute nearly eight percent of all in-state jobs. With the travel industry being such a vital contributor to our economy and the well-being of residents, why do we bite the hand that feeds us by insulting those people who are paying the freight?
