J-School students attend sports broadcasting seminar
J-School students attended a sports seminar June 29 sponsored by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and the Missouri Broadcasters Association. Students heard remarks from Chiefs Radio Network broadcasters Dan Israel and Mitch Holthus, Brian Hanni of the Jayhawk Radio Network, and Wyatt Thompson of the K-State Sports Network. They also attended roundtable discussions and attended the Royals vs. Rangers game at Kauffman Stadium.
RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye is the recipient of the Joseph McKerns Research Grant awarded by the American Journalism Historians Association. The grant will support travel and other research costs associated with an upcoming research project examining the historical context in which the Native press was founded and its work educating, informing and advocating for Native communities on issues of interest and import to those communities.

A study by Annalise BainesProfessor Hyunjin SeoMuhammad IttefaqFatemeh ShayestehUrsula Kamanga and Yuchen Liu titled “Race/ethnicity, online information and COVID-19 vaccination: Study of minority immigrants’ internet use for health-related information” was accepted for publication in the Convergence journal. The study examined how 49 racial/ethnic minority immigrants in the Midwest navigated online health information related to COVID-19 vaccination and their willingness to get vaccinated.

Associate Professor Genelle Belmas participated in a podcasting workshop put on by the National Humanities Center at the end of June. She put together a podcast episode with two other participants entitled “Making Space, Being Heard” (available on SoundCloud). She served as the sound editor for the team and learned more about constructing, recording and producing an academic podcast and working toward making such productions “count” in the tenure and promotion process.

Faculty, staff and students are invited to a free virtual election cybersecurity workshop sponsored by the USC Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership and Policy at 1:30 p.m. July 21. The USC Election Cybersecurity Initiative is a new nonpartisan independent project supported by Google to help protect campaigns and elections. Learn more and register.

Volunteers needed for Super Service Saturday
Please join KU’s Center for Community Outreach for Super Service Saturday, which is Lawrence’s largest day of service on Aug. 27. Volunteers will check in at 10 a.m. and then be transported to various volunteer sites. Volunteers will get free food and a T-shirt.

Mark your calendars for Aug. 21 for the J-School’s Academic Welcome! From 2 to 4 p.m. in Stauffer-Flint Hall, we will celebrate the start of another school year with games, snacks and prizes. Students can meet professors and fellow J-School students while learning about all the student organizations and other opportunities to get involved in the school.

Students in the Integrated Marketing Communications master’s program collaborated with Children’s Mercy Hospital’s Prepped and Ready effort to develop new ways for parents to help prevent crises among their teens. The students in Professor Angie Hendershot’s class created materials to promote the program, including a series of informative videos and suicide prevention toolkits. The partnership helped boost messaging to hundreds of families throughout Kansas and Missouri. Read the KU News story.

The deadline for nominations for the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and individual awards is Aug. 1. The KAB Hall of Fame Award is the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. The individual awards include the Distinguished Service Award; the Sonny Slater Award for Service to Station and Community; the Mike Oatman Award for Broadcast Sales Excellence; the Hod Humiston Award for Sports Broadcasting; the Friend of Kansas Broadcasting Award; and the Rising Star Award, which is new this year.
