Hello VOS Family,

I hope you are enjoying your summer, but also longing for some good snow, good science, fellowship, and a new venue for VOS at Lake Tahoe next February.

I am excited to introduce our 2024 Jacques Jenny lecturer, Dr. Thomas Gross. Dr. Gross is a pioneer in the development of coxofemoral joint resurfacing for people, and actively involved in joint resurfacing in his surgery practice. His discipline is particularly close to my heart as my mom had a fall last year and sustained a comminuted fracture at the stem of her prothesis on a hip that had been revised once already. One of the big benefits of resurfacing is sparing of the femoral head and neck and no need for a stem in the proximal femur to create a stress riser. Fortunately, the surgeon who repaired her fracture is working on a system with Synthes to bore holes in the stem to allow fixation through the plate and stem to allow bi-cortical purchase proximally and gratefully she is doing well.

We do have a few resurfacing procedures in veterinary surgery, like CUE, PGR and OATS, but we clearly have other areas for development. Dr. Gross will hopefully stimulate some interest and initiatives in our group. He is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he also completed his internship and residency. He did a fellowship in joint reconstructive surgery with Dr. William Bargar in Sacramento before going into private practice. Dr. Gross is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
