One Community One Family

Dear Christ the King Catholic School Community,

Today, we continue to send prayers of hope, compassion, and peace to the families and community of the Los Angeles Palisade Fire. We as a school community plan to collect funds for such a devastating loss, and send all funds in good faith to Catholic Charities. Catholic Charities is a network of social service organizations operated by the Catholic Church that provides various forms of assistance, such as food, housing, healthcare, and education, to those in need. This organization embodies the Church's commitment to social justice and charity, influencing social movements that advocate for the welfare of marginalized communities and promote systemic change through service and advocacy.

Commendations to our 2nd grade Brownie Troop Leaders Susan Stonebraker and Meghan Reed, Mrs. Urbina/Mrs. Snyder, and the Brownie Troop 30155 for such an awesome and intentional coat-drive. A special thank you to our One Community One Family for your generosity and kindness.

This weekend we acknowledge and celebrate the life, legacy, and amazing spiritual light of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A beautiful and powerful prayer that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wrote rests below as a reminder of how to live our lives, “Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.”

This biblical verse equally reveals to us similar truths, “There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.” (Ephesians 4:2–6).

This Friday there is no school in session as our faculty and staff will be participating in a Diocesan-wide professional staff development inservice. Please enjoy this time with your families as we see the light of Catholic Schools Week, and Open House shining through – and right around the corner.

God bless you all,

Mr. Joseph M. Silveira Ed.D.

Principal

Christ the King Catholic School

Prayers

Dear Heavenly Father, we are so grateful for all of the blessings You have provided. We are thankful for our warm homes and friendly community. Please guide us to help others by lending a helping hand to those in need. We pray for all those affected by the fires in Southern California. Please hear the intentions in our hearts for our CTK community. Please continue to bless Father Brain Timoney as he celebrates his 94th birthday.

We pray for Father Dibble who has gone to Heaven. Father Dibble had been a priest for 60 years. We thank you for your service at CTK. We pray for Brother Ron Gallagher (St. Mary's College) who has gone to Heaven.

If you have special intentions please email Mrs. Meran here so we can include them in our next newsletter.

Powerschool Cybersecurity Incident

Dear Families and Staff of the Catholic Schools of the Diocese of Oakland,

The Department of Catholic Schools is notifying all members of the Diocese of Oakland community of a security breach affecting PowerSchool. PowerSchool is a student information system used by our schools as a database, gradebook, and reporting tool, supporting critical operational functions of our schools. To the best of our knowledge, the breach was contained and the stolen data destroyed. Nevertheless, we take responsibility for notifying our community and explaining the incident. Please read on for details.

What happened?

  1. An unauthorized individual got access to a PowerSchool internal support system on December 21st and used that to download student and teacher data for many PowerSchool servers on December 22nd. This includes schools and districts across the country. This was not a failure on the part of any Diocese of Oakland systems or personnel.
  2. PowerSchool became aware of the breach on December 28th. The company contained the breach and negotiated with the unauthorized individual to delete the data. Several professional cybersecurity companies were involved in ensuring that the data was not copied and will not be released.
  3. PowerSchool notified the affected customers on January 7th. Our technology team verified the method and scope of the breach. PowerSchool will work with cybersecurity professionals to continually monitor the web and ensure that the data is not released.

What data was accessed?

  • Directory data from the PowerSchool Student Information System, including names, addresses, phone numbers, and demographics for staff, students, guardians, and emergency contacts. Student school data such as an internal school ID, grade level, and graduation year. Some of the student medical data on file was included, such as a summary of chronic medical conditions and allergies. Student access keys to the PowerSchool portal (will be reset).
  • PowerSchool Portal access keys (student/parent access). Please note, parent account passwords are distinct from the keys used to add a student to those accounts. Parent accounts were not included in the breached data and no parent passwords need to be changed.

What data was not accessed?

Only a subset of our data was accessed. We maintain separate systems in order to safeguard the most sensitive data. The following data was not accessed:

  • We do not keep records of Social Security Numbers, financial data, or identity documents such as Birth Certificates in the PowerSchool Student Information System.
  • Not included in the breached data were grades, test data, info about learning challenges, or student or staff photos.
  • Parent and Staff login passwords are stored in a separate, secured data table, and were not included.

Recommendations

PowerSchool has stated that it does not expect any misuse of personal information or financial harm to impacted individuals as a result of this incident. They will be providing credit monitoring services to affected adults and identity protection services to affected minors in accordance with regulatory and contractual requirements. This will depend on the specific data released. Since we do not store Social Security Numbers, this may not be applicable to us. More information will be provided on these services and eligibility when available.

Additional suggestions and resources for safeguarding your personal security can be found at Google Safety CenterApple Personal Safety User Guide, and Microsoft Support.

Summary

The Department of Catholic Schools, PowerSchool, and the schools of the Diocese of Oakland understand that this is a serious breach of trust. We will be carefully monitoring this situation and provide additional information and resources as they become available. If you have questions or additional concerns, please reply to this email.

2024 Auction Update Gratitude Message

Thank You, Christ the King Parents and Community!

We cannot thank you enough for the overwhelming generosity, support, and love you have shown for Christ the King Catholic School during the 2024 Tahitian Nights Auction. It is because of this incredible community that our school remains such a remarkable and cherished place. Every dollar you bid, and every paddle you raised has made an enduring impact on the lives of our CTK students—not only today but for years to come!

Your amazing contributions made the 2024 Fund-A-Need a tremendous success. Thanks to your support, our students and teachers are now enjoying brand-new classroom furniture and outdoor tables with umbrellas, creating even more enriching spaces for learning and socializing.

We are thrilled to share that, with the support of Fr. Paulson, Dr. Silveira, our incredible faculty and staff, devoted parents, community members, sponsors, and the 2024 Auction Committee, the Tahitian Nights Auction raised $234,000! These funds will directly offset tuition costs and support (5-percent) youth ministry and religious education programs within our parish.

Thank you for your dedication to our school and community. Together, we are making a profound difference in the lives of our students.

With deepest gratitude,

Eva Baker, Jaffe Leffler, Lara Mahlik, & Colleen Shively

Tuition Assistance Program 2025-2026

Christ the King Tuition Assistance Program

Diocesan and School financial aid programs may be available for families who qualify. While the primary responsibility for financing a student's Catholic education rests with the student's family, Christ the King Catholic School will make every effort to see that no child is denied access to a Catholic education based solely on lack of funds to pay tuition.

There are three types of Tuition Assistance available to Christ the King families: BASIC, FACE, and the CTK Children’s Fund.

  • BASIC (Bay Area Scholastic Inner City) is an outside source available to all new students in Grades K-8 whose families qualify for the free/reduced hot lunch program and/or meet the income criteria set by Basic Fund. The Basic Fund application income criteria guidelines are strictly adhered to. Applications are available online only at How to apply for BASIC and must be filed by March 31, 2025.

  • Diocese of Oakland FACE (Family Aid for Catholic Education) Grant is a Diocesan sponsored tuition assistance program available to all qualifying families requesting financial aid. A FACTS application is required (see below) and is due no later than March 31, 2025.  The FACE Financial Aid Timeline for 2025-2026 school year can be found here.  FACE qualifications are here.

  • The CTK Children’s Fund is tuition assistance sponsored by Christ the King Catholic School and is primarily available to students currently attending Christ the King. A FACTS application is required (see below) is due no later than March 31, 2025.

FACTS application instructions: FACTS applications are available online only here:

FACTS Application. Applicants must check the box for FACE under “Other Organizations”. Applications must include a copy of the family's most recent federal income tax return in order to verify the family's financial status and are due no later than March 31, 2025. Application instructions can be viewed here: Application Instructions. For more information please read the FACTS flyer here.

To equitably distribute the available CTK Children’s Funds, it is important that the Principal and Pastor have adequate information. Therefore, the school requires documentation of family financial resources in order to make determinations on applications for these funds. In addition to a family's financial resources, the Principal and Pastor will consider any other relevant family circumstances in making determinations on applications.

The amount of assistance awarded will vary from family to family and will depend upon the family's financial status, the family's particular circumstances and the amount of money the school has available for tuition assistance in a given year. Christ the King School will not discriminate in the administration of its Tuition Assistance Program on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or age in violation of existing state or federal laws or regulations.

All information regarding applications for Tuition Assistance will be held in strictest confidence by the Principal and Pastor. Parents are also expected to keep confidential the amount of any Tuition Assistance award that is given. Families will be notified of the determination made by the Principal on their request for a tuition grant, including the amount of any award for the upcoming school year by May 30, 2025.
