Message from the Associate Dean - BCH Oakland

July 2022

Kelley Meade MD

Summertime!

Please join me again in welcoming the incoming interns, residents, and fellows to BCH Oakland. This season is such an exciting time for the hospital. We also welcome many new faculty and staff.

The new year brings new opportunities as we work together toward a team-based approach to helping children in the clinical, research, and educational areas of our work. Thankfully, our vaccine program has now expanded to include infants and toddlers.  We also are still dealing with COVID, of course, so please do take the daily screener to guide you during this time.

I hope you all will have a chance to rest and recreate this summer!

With a $3 million gift from Elisa and Marc Stad, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals have launched the Stad Center for Pediatric Pain, Palliative & Integrative Medicine – one of the most innovative and comprehensive programs of its kind in the nation.

Led by Stefan Friedrichsdorf, MD, an internationally renowned pediatrician specializing in pain management and palliative medicine, the Stad Center is an intensive, interdisciplinary and rehabilitative inpatient and outpatient pain clinic treating children affected by both acute and chronic pain, including the discomfort from sickle cell disease. Voalte for Clinical Communications at UCSF Health

(Updated 7/13/22)

All UCSF providers (including BCH Oakland providers) are expected to use Voalte as their primary clinical communications app. It is important to log into the appropriate Voalte roles when covering an inpatient service (including consult services). For further instructions, click here to access Voalte tip sheets.

Nurses and other inpatient staff will have access to Voalte starting August 1. At that time, it will be even more important for everyone to use Voalte roles.

Contact Mike Lang (Michael.Lang@ucsf.edu) and/or Jason Jagodzinski (Jason.Jagodzinski@ucsf.edu) if you have any questions about Voalte.

Our eventual goal is to forward Spok pages to Voalte so that Voalte can serve as a pager replacement. Until that happens, providers are expected to continue to use their Spok pagers or Spok Mobile on their personal smart phones. If you are interested in signing up for Spok Mobile, contact Bryan Plett (Bryan.Plett@ucsf.edu).

BCH Chicanx Latinx Campus Association Awards Laptops to Four CHAMPS Graduates

CLCA Awards recipients

On June 2nd, the Chicanx Latinx Campus Association (CLCA) Chapter at BCH Oakland celebrated the accomplishments of the CHAMPS graduating Class of 2022. Through CHAMPS, minority high school students from under-resourced communities explore careers in health care, receive academic guidance and social emotional support, and build life skills and professional development. Recognizing the accomplishments of the 29 high school graduates from this year's CHAMPS cohort, the CLCA Oakland Chapter set out to raise funds to award one of the program’s Chicanx Latinx youth with a laptop for college.

Release of the UCSF Changemaker Series

The UCSF Changemaker Series, created by Professor of Medicine Hilary Seligman, MD, MAS, is a four-part video series that seeks to build the capacity of UCSF researchers to generate scientific evidence that is responsive to the needs of real-world decision-makers. Each 10-15 minute video highlights a UCSF researcher in conversation with an interdisciplinary panel of non-academic experts discussing how investigators at all stages of their careers can more meaningfully inform policies, systems, and structures in order to create social or policy change.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION, and

ANTI-RACISM at UCSF BCH

Treadwell2019.jpg

From Marsha J. Treadwell, PhD

DEI Co-Chair BCH Oakland

Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, UCSF School of Medicine

Jordan Fund Endowed Chair, Department of Hematology/Oncology

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.

BCH DEI/AR COUNCIL UPDATES

The DEI/AR Council is proud to present our second annual Action Plan for Advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism for the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals in FY2022. This strategic plan was created collaboratively by the BCH DEI/AR Council, Senior Leadership, Executive Leadership, and the Board of Directors. Moving forward, the work must continue to be collaborative since we know that the impacts of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism occur at individual, institutional and systemic levels.
