The purpose of the Review of the Produce Safety University Cooperative Agreement is to select one organization to evaluate the Produce Safety University (PSU) course - a week-long train-the-trainer immersion course for child nutrition professionals.
Participants of PSU learn to identify and manage food safety risks associated with fresh produce whether it’s purchased from farmers or distributors, received whole or fresh-cut, or grown in a school garden. The curriculum covers all aspects of the fresh produce supply chain - from growing and harvesting to storage and preparation - through a combination of lecture, laboratory, and field-trip instruction.
FNS seeks to enter into a new, one-time cooperative agreement with an entity capable of evaluating the PSU course, the effectiveness of its curriculum, and the impact of PSU graduates, including how many other graduates train on PSU topics and the resulting changes to their operational food safety practices.
The FNS Food Safety Branch (FSB) regularly works to improve the course, and a comprehensive assessment of the course will permit FNS FSB to enhance the content, delivery, and impact of the PSU curriculum. Additionally, understanding how graduates apply their PSU knowledge, which topics they teach to their peers, and what resources they use to train others will determine how well PSU is meeting its train-the-trainer objective and where improvements can be made.
