Appreciation for President Poitras

As President Audrey Poitras' 27 years of leading the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) has come to an end, we would like to take the opportunity to thank her and acknowledge her incredible contributions to the MNA and Métis Housing.

President Poitras served as chair of Métis Urban Housing Corporation (MUHC) and Métis Capital Housing Corporation (MCHC)’s Board of Directors since 2014 and was actively involved in developing programs and services long before then. During this time, she was a beacon of leadership, helping to lay the groundwork and provide the vision for many of our programs and services.

Her financial, administrative, and political knowledge, combined with her tenacity, has been instrumental in the growth of MUHC and MCHC and its long-term sustainability. These housing supports have made the Nation stronger.

President Poitras always prioritized the needs of Métis Citizens and communities, as well as fought for Métis self-government recognition. With the transition to the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, we will be able to provide even more support for our Citizens' housing needs.

Thank you, President Poitras, for your unwavering leadership.

Bonnyville Groundbreaking Ceremony

On August 22, we celebrated the groundbreaking of our Family Reunification Program Phase 2 housing project in Bonnyville.

The Family Reunification Program (FRP) is designed and dedicated to reuniting Indigenous mothers, fathers, and their children by providing safe, long-term housing, and supports. Families are referred to the program via Alberta Children’s Services. Our approach is a culturally-responsive, strength-based program where families are empowered to be part of the decision-making process and are supported throughout the program and beyond.

We believe a healthy community raises healthy children.

The Métis Capital Housing development will be comprised of 12 units of apartment dwelling, along with a common area that includes workshop spaces, cultural counselling rooms, learning centres, and a kitchen. The proposed project will give Indigenous families a safe zone to start their healing process surrounded by cultural programming, teachings, and healing circles, along with group and one-on-one counselling.

Further details, such as construction timelines, will be provided as they become available.

Truth and Reconciliation Day

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day.

It is a day for us to reflect on the true history and impact of residential schools, to honour and remember the children who survived, and those who didn’t. The orange shirt is a powerful symbol representing the loss of cultural identity, freedom, and self-esteem that Indigenous children and families have experienced over generations, and to never forget that "Every Child Matters."

We will be closed on Monday, October 2 to honour the day.

Home Programs Return!

Last month we made an exciting announcement - our Home Programs are back!

We were (and continue to be) thrilled to be able to announce the return of our Home Programs for Métis Citizens in good standing for a limited time: DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE; HOME REPAIRS ASSISTANCE; RENTAL SUPPLEMENT; and STUDENT RENTAL SUPPLEMENT. Our MORTGAGE ASSISTANCE program remains open. These programs increase housing security for Métis Albertans which is reflected in the recent Statistics Canada 2021 Census in Brief - Housing conditions among First Nations people, Métis, and Inuit in Canada.

Current applicants on the waitlist have been given priority. We are reaching out to existing applicants to update information and process their applications first. For an application to be considered, we must receive all required documentation.

Due to the large number of existing applicants, we did not open the Home Repair and Down Payment Assistance program to new applicants. We currently are over the 200-applicant limit for these programs and will not open the program to new applicants until current applicants are contacted.

The Student Rental Assistance and Rental Assistance Program are accepting new applications. We will process 200 applications in the order in which they were received.

We will keep the programs running until every cent is used to house our community.

Commonly Asked Questions

Where does the funding go?

The need for funding support is much greater than the amount of funds available.

Our Home Programs are funded by Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC), under the 2018 Housing Sub-Accord. This funding is provided to the Métis Nation of Alberta specifically for these Home Programs. Once all funds are distributed, we can no longer offer the program until more funding is secured.

Why was my application not processed?

For an application to be successfully processed, we need to receive correct and completed application forms and all required supporting documentation. Once all documentation is received, your application will be processed, and you will be notified of its status.

How much is the rent on your homes?

Our MUHC homes are 25 percent of gross family income with utilities included, and our MCHC homes are 20 percent below market rate with a fixed utility charge.

Rental Availability

Our rental availability is constantly changing, and some properties are available immediately! You can find a list of our available properties* here, along with an application form.

A common question we get asked is, “Why is there a waitlist if there are available properties?” A few of the reasons for the waitlist are:

  1. The property does not work for the family – wrong number of bedrooms, accessibility, and/or area.
  2. The application is missing information or has not been approved.
  3. The applicant’s information was not updated, or they did not check in with us every three months to confirm they are still interested.
  4. The home is a Métis Capital Housing home, and they are looking for a Métis Urban Housing home, or vice versa.

These are just a few of the reasons.

If you would like to call one of our properties home, please fill out an application form and send it in. Once we have received a completed application form and processed your application, our rental team will be in touch.

Métis Urban and Métis Capital Housing do not offer emergency housing. If you require emergency housing assistance, please reach out to our Reaching Home Program at reachinghome@metishousing.ca.

* Availability subject to change and application approval.
