Summer Happenings with Southern Nursing Research Society
I hope you are all having a wonderful summer! For our own self-care and wellbeing, be sure to take time to relax and enjoy some rest and relaxation. Scholarship, research, writing, teaching, administration, leadership, and providing nursing care can be exhausting, and if we exhaust ourselves, we have nothing left to give to those who depend on us. So, enjoy some vacation time this summer!
June was Pride month and I’m proud of how diverse, inclusive, and accepting SNRS is. We have a diverse membership of both genders, multiple ethnicities, from multiple states within the SNRS region, and actually a number of members who live outside of the Southern region. Not only is SNRS diverse, we are also inclusive.
We welcome all nurses as members regardless of educational level who are committed to nursing research (both discovery and application) and scholarship, and we have a category of associate membership for non-nurses who are also interested in nursing research. We are expanding our membership to include nurses who apply research as well as conduct original, discovery research, because what good are significant research findings that can benefit health, if they are not applied to patient care? As SNRS members, we strive for equity in health care, in its design and delivery. More research is uncovering how unconscious bias permeates healthcare through algorithms that base healthcare choices on the features and behaviors of the majority population and are not facile enough to account for characteristics different from the majority. We endeavor to find instances of unconscious bias within our Bylaws and Policies and Procedures and discard them and we encourage our members to read our Bylaws and Policies and Procedures manuals (they are on the SNRS website) and let us know if any instances of bias are found.
Our SNRS Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement includes these four actions:
- Action 1 — Deliberately engage in communication with members of diverse nursing communities to collaborate for coalition-building to promote an inclusive society.
- Action 2 — Enhance awareness of DEI at the individual, committee, and organizational levels.
- Action 3 — Intentionally incorporate the practice of DEI in all aspects of the organization’s activities.
- Action 4 — Intentionally elevate and accelerate the comprehensive integration of DEI into our strategic and operating plans by submitting comprehensive recommendations for change.
Our DEI statement reflects the commitments and plans for works as of today. We recognize the urgency and demands for further strategies to identify areas to optimize DEI. SNRS is committed to continue this journey and incorporate its members’ needs by providing resources and implementing strategic plans.
We are in full conference planning mode too. Our 2024 conference will be held at the Le Méridien-Sheraton Hotel, Charlotte, NC, on February 21-23, 2024 and we are actively recruiting sponsoring institutions. Sponsors receive significant recognition from SNRS, not only at the conference but also throughout the year. Our conference theme for 2024 is “Collaborating to Advance Nursing Research, Education, Leadership, and Practice” and with that theme, we are advancing our Society’s diversity, equity, and inclusivity. Our conference objectives are to:
- Explore historical, existing, and emerging nursing knowledge addressing the impact of social and structural determinants on individual, community, and population health.
- Discuss the robust role nursing science has on understanding the impact of social and structural determinants on health.
- Curate strategies to design, implement, and disseminate nursing science that promotes health equity and mitigates disparities.
The conference is being planned to appeal to researchers, faculty, nurses in practice, students at the undergraduate and graduate level, translation and implementation scientists, and of course, our members. It is especially important for members to attend as we are contemplating changes in our Bylaws to increase our diversity and inclusion, and the Bylaws are the responsibility of the membership. We need to hear the members’ input on the Board’s proposals to enhance the operating efficiency of the Society as well.
Abstracts for podium and poster presentations will be accepted in three categories: non-research projects; research projects, and scholarly projects. The non-research projects can concern topics such as research career trajectories, methodological challenges, senior scientist experiences, advice and theory, the process of conducting research in non-academic settings, the role of nurse scientists in clinical settings, the role of DNP prepared nurse in the practice setting, DNP/PhD collaboration, or best practices for nurse educators. Scholarly projects are defined as evidence-based practice or quality improvement project. We continue to welcome reports of completed and on-going research from pilot studies to multi-site clinical trials.
We are also soliciting pre-conference workshops that will occur on Wednesday morning prior to the start of the conference at 1:00 PM. And lastly, our conference cannot continue without our abstract reviewers. Last year, the abstract reviewers performed a great service and there were too few of them. Everyone who has conducted and published research and has doctoral preparation can be a reviewer, and I hope many members will consider being an abstract reviewer. The more reviewers, the few abstracts each one has to complete!

We are very excited for the upcoming 38th Annual Conference in Charlotte, NC. All individuals interested in advancing nursing science, including practicing nurse researchers and dedicated nursing science students and faculty are invited to attend. The Southern Nursing Research Society Annual Conference provides an opportunity for SNRS members to report ongoing and completed research as well as theoretical, conceptual, and methodological projects to colleagues and now Scholarly Projects as posters and podiums.
To begin the abstract submission process:

Now Accepting Proposals for Pre-Conference & Conference Workshops
The Southern Nursing Research Society is now accepting proposals for pre-conference and post-conference workshops for the 2024 Annual Conference.
The goal of the workshops at the Annual Conference is to provide educational opportunities in research for SNRS members and doctoral student members. Pre-conference workshops will be held on the morning of the first conference day, Wednesday, February 21, prior to the start of the Annual Conference sessions. Post-conference workshops will be held in the afternoon on Friday, February 23. These sessions are typically three hours in length with two to four speakers per workshop.
The workshops may focus on:
- Specific populations (e.g. members of a RIIG, doctoral students, mid-career researchers);
- Research skill acquisition (e.g. Publication, Grant Writing); or
- Specific research challenges (e.g. Vulnerable populations, Building interprofessional teams, Multi-site studies).

Institute of Pediatric Nursing Survey
SNRS members who identify as pediatric nursing professionals are invited to provide their opinions in a major workforce study. To chart a path for our specialty and optimal child health, the Institute of Pediatric Nursing (IPN), a committee of the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB), is exploring issues facing pediatric nursing professionals.
Your anonymous input in this important survey will support next steps to better understand challenges across roles, settings, subspecialties, geographic locations, and more. Experiencing and witnessing racism, microaggression, burnout, abuse, and moral distress will also be explored along with access to support when such incidents occur. Survey findings will drive collaboration and innovation to address the needs of the pediatric-focused workforce.

SNRS Member Spotlight
Pi-Ming Yeh, Ph.D., RN., Associate Professor, College of Nursing, East Tennessee State University
I have published 23 peer-reviewed scholarly articles in premier journals and 8 chapters in books related to nursing, family care-giver reactions, and psychological well-being. According to my study, spiritual well-being is an important variable related to psychological well-being.
Over the last several years I have received the Missouri Western Foundation Dr. James V. Mehl Award for Outstanding Faculty Scholarship (2017) and the Jesse Lee Myers Excellence in Teaching Award (2011). I also received four Marita G. Titler Conduct of Research Poster Awards (2015, 2017, 2018, and 2021) at a National Evidence-Based Practice Conference.
Currently, I am the president of Epsilon Sigma at-Large Chapter and have done fifty oral and poster presentations at international and national conferences in Melbourne, Australia; Taipei, Taiwan; USA; and San Juan, Puerto Rico hosted by Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society and other nursing societies.

Katherine Carroll Britt, PhD, MSN, RN, University of Pennsylvania
Dr. Carroll Britt had the privilege of working with some amazing leaders in the nursing and aging field on two recently published guest editorials. Dr. Mary Naylor and Dr. Pam Cacchione, and Dr. Carroll Britt published an editorial on addressing the needs of aging adults by partnering with faith-based organizations in Research in Nursing & Health. This was prompted by monthly discussions by The Caregiving NOW initiative at the NewCourtland Center for Transitions and Health at Penn School of Nursing of how they can support caregivers today and by the 2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers which reports on how public and private sectors can better support caregivers, mentioning faith-based organizations. Dr. Jill Hamilton and Dr. Carroll Britt published an editorial on ways to support the spiritual and religious practices of older adults with cognitive impairment and dementia in the Journal of Gerontological Nursing.

Williams and Tabia Henry Akintobi provides the background on how social determinants of health has influenced the health of Black Americans. The book brings together writings from subject matter experts regarding research and interventions that advance health equity.

Susan Fowler, PhD RN CRRN NE-BC FCNS, AAACN
AAACN is excited to announce Susan B. Fowler, PhD, RN, CRRN, NE-BC, FCNS as the first official editor of The Journal of Ambulatory Care Nursing.
Dr. Fowler is a nurse scientist who has held numerous research-related positions in healthcare. She has a passion for writing and mentoring others in disseminate of scholarly and clinical work. Dr. Fowler was editor of Insight, the journal of the American Society of Ophthalmic Registered Nurses (ASORN), and has been a member of many editorial and manuscript review boards. She has been involved in several professional nursing organizations, holding leadership positions including president, secretary/treasurer, and chairperson.
The new journal is expected to launch in 2025. Expect to see additional communication as we seek editorial board members, manuscript reviewers, and announce a call for manuscripts later this year. We hope the membership is as excited as we are to further advance ambulatory care nursing by disseminating new knowledge, and research through our very own journal.

Parent-Child Research Interest and Implementation Group
The Parent-Child RIIG is committed to fostering the advancement of research for the care of children, parents, and families. We are dedicated to creating a supportive and collaborative environment that encourages the implementation of best practices, facilitates networking opportunities, and promotes the sharing of valuable information. RIIG members believe that nurses play a pivotal role in providing high-quality, evidence-based care by creating and disseminating nursing research.
As a member of our RIIG, you are invited to actively participate in our initiatives. By joining us, whether you are a researcher, academician, bedside nurse, clinician, or student, you contribute to our collective efforts in advancing healthcare for parents and children. Within this community, we foster an environment of support, inspiration, and resources for all individuals interested in parent-child research. This year, we will continue our program offerings of webinars and panel discussions led by Parent-Child researchers on current research topics.
