The Sixth Sunday After Pentecost

Luke 10:38-42

"Freed to Grow"

Rev. Dr. Charles Kutz-Marks

A Message From Our Visiting Minister

The Gospels and other New Testament teachings demonstrate to us an utterly new way of life, often in direct contradiction to what the world teaches us. What would such a Spirit infused community look like today? What would change? How can we move toward that higher life?

About Rev. Dr. Kutz-Marks

The Rev. Dr. Charles Kutz-Marks, or Chuck as he prefers to be called, was born in New Orleans, but grew up in Ocala, Florida.

Chuck received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University. He then attended seminary at Chicago Theological Seminary in Chicago earning his Master of Divinity degree. There he met Becca Kutz who would join him in marriage in 1979. Later he earned a Doctor of Ministry from Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit.

In December of 2005, he began serving as Sr. Minister of University Christian Church in Austin where he is still an active member. In 2019, he retired from full time pastoral ministry.

Chuck’s outside of church interests include: cooking, astronomy (a member of the Austin Astronomical Society), amateur radio, raised-bed vegetable gardening, Texas history, and travel trailering.

Chuck and Becca have two children, David and Marie, and five grandchildren.

From Anna Marie...

Consider the great income disparity in our society from those who labor physically for long hours to receive less than minimum wage to those who we can imagine living like Scrooge McDuck with riches to burn. There are other civilized societies in the world in which the disparity isn’t so great. There both respect and remuneration are allowed to those who work, but not in what we call white-collar jobs. In Japan, school teachers are respected and paid well for their work. In Germany waitstaff are respected and can make a career of their work because the compensation allows them to live at a reasonable level, even supporting their families. Some places mechanics can have both plenty of respect and adequate pay to care well for their families. So it is with many kinds of laborers; their work, even though not of the highest academic variety is still appreciated and they are not relegated to low class status. Colossians 3:23-24 23 Whatever task you must do, work as if your soul depends on it, as for the Lord and not for humans, 24 since you know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you serve the Lord Christ. Might there be a lesson for us in how God values each person’s work?

Hopewell Middle School Supply Drive

The 2022-2023 school year is just around the corner, and, as in the past, the Hopewell Principal (Lynda Garinger) has indicated that many students will still need help with supplies. Hopewell Middle School has requested the continued support of RRCC in providing much needed student school supplies, to begin the school year.

The Principal and Counselors have provided a list of the most needed items and the Outreach Team will purchase the supplies rather than request donations of supplies from RRCC members, to ensure that specific needs are met. Although we do have a budget for Outreach to spend on events and supplies, we are providing an opportunity for additional donations, should anyone be interested in contributing to this worthy cause.

In the five years since we began this project in 2017, we have donated school supplies valued at over $2,700 to the students at Hopewell who need supplies. This will be our 6th year in this partnership, and it is important that the students have the supplies that they need and are engaged academically and know that they are supported by the community. The last two years have been like never before, and this year will surely have its challenges.

Please consider making a contribution to this project with a check or online contribution marked "Hopewell School Supplies" during any week in July. Thank you for your help in supporting the students of Hopewell Middle School, with school supplies, in our on-going effort to "embrace our neighbors with Christ-like love"!

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

I AM YOUR JOY!

Let these words reverberate in your mind and sink into your innermost being. I—your Companion who will never leave you—am a boundless source of Joy. If you really believe this, you can rest in the truth that every day of your life is a good day. So refuse to use the label “a bad day,” even when you’re struggling deeply. Your circumstances may indeed be very hard, but I am nonetheless with you, holding you by your right hand. There is good to be found in this day—and everyday—because of My constant Presence and steadfast Love.

You may not be rich by worldly standards, but My unfailing Love is priceless! This Love guarantees that you can find refuge in the shadow of My wings no matter what is happening. Also, it gives you access to My river of delights. When your world feels anything but delightful, turn to Me and drink deeply from this ravishing river: My loving presence. I AM YOUR JOY!

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

Deuteronomy 31:8

Nevertheless I am continually with You; You hold me by my right hand.

Psalm 73:23 NKJV

How priceless is you unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights.

Psalm 36:7-8

Prayer:

Thank you Lord for all the Joy YOU bring to us each and every day. Guide us to see your Joy especially when life seems so difficult.

Amen
