Radiologic Technology Students Exceed Average National Exam Pass Rate

The Radiologic Technology major at LaGuardia Community College helps preparestudents to become licensed X-ray technologists. The major, which grants an Associate of Applied Science degree, combines the arts and sciences while immersed in technology. As part of the training, students must successfully pass a licensing exam before they can step into a profession in radiologic technology. According to the American of Register Radiologic Technologist (ARRT), LaGuardia’s Class of 2022 successfully passed the licensing exam with a pass rate of 90%, compared to the national average of 83.5%, The ARRT is the world’s largest organization offering credentials in medical imaging, interventional procedures, and radiation therapy. ARRT certifies and registers technologists in a range of disciplines by overseeing and administering education, ethics, and examination requirements.

LaGuardia Group Completes Installation of Wetland Frames in Blissville

LaGuardia Community College partnered with the Newton Creek Alliance (NCA) to complete the installation of 20 wetland frames at the Waste Management Review Avenue Facility in Blissville, Queens. Under the guidance of LaGuardia Professor Sarah Durand, students and NCA staff worked to install and plant these suspended aluminum frames with spartina alterniflora – a native salt marsh grass that formed the basis of the 1,200 acres of wetlands that once surrounding Newtown Creek. A timelapse video shows how the wetland frames are impacted by the water levels.

LaGuardia Film Expert Sheds Light on Cult Films and Current Blockbusters

The New York Times recently published an article, “Annihilation,’ ‘Support the Girls’ and More Streaming Gems,” which included a review of a documentary film by LaGuardia Community College staff member Thomas Edward Seymour titled, “Cult Films and the Decline of Physical Media (2015).” Seymour, a senior college lab technician and adjunct assistant professor, has taught video production but currently works in New Media Technology. He comes from an independent filmmaking background, but also worked as a CBS news cutter in Hartford, Connecticut years ago. “I really try to emphasize learning all positions of filmmaking from shooting to cutting,” Seymour said. “I believe that is the only way you can become unstoppable. The documentaries mentioned in The New York Times were feature length films that only cost $500 to create. In creating your own independent projects, you create your own opportunities, and this experience can lead to industry jobs."

RED HAWK ATHLETICS

Red Hawks Athletics Program Seeks Student-Athletes for Soccer, Basketball, and Cross-Country

LaGuardia Community College/CUNY is preparing to welcome students to the 2023-2024 academic year on September 8. As students settle in, the Red Hawks Athletics Program is inviting student-athletes to join a variety of sports teams being offered this year. Andrew Walker, director of LaGuardia’s athletics program, says this season promises to bring more opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to cheer on the Red Hawks.

E-Lobby Entrance Closed for Renovations

The main lobby of the E-Building at Thomson Avenue will be closed for renovations beginning on the evening of Wednesday, August 23 through Wednesday, August 30. Renovations will include floor tile replacement and other work in preparation for the 2023-2024 academic year. The E-lobby may remain open on subsequent weekends depending on the availability of materials. Building entry will be rerouted through the M-Building during this time. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

LaGuardia’s Opening Sessions Scheduled September 6

Opening Sessions 2023 will take place Wednesday, September 6 exploring the theme “Student Success: Inspiration, Cultivation, and Application.” Opening Sessions will be held in person at the Mainstage Theater, attendees are invited to start the day with breakfast at 8 a.m.; the plenary session begins at 9 a.m. Breakout sessions will be offered from 11:10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 12:15 to 1:05 p.m. Event Co-Chairs Deema Bayrakdar, David Stott, Cristina Natale, and Jasmine Edwards invite the college community to attend. President’s Welcome Address Scheduled September 8

President Kenneth Adams will present a Welcome Address on Friday, September 8, at 10 a.m. President Adams will be joined by other members of the college administration who will share updates and information to help the college community prepare for the 2023-2024 academic year. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend in-person for view online (RSVP and streaming info coming soon).

LaGuardia Seeks Staff Members to Join New Council

LaGuardia Community College is forming a new Staff Council offering opportunities for staff members to share their concerns, address issues, and celebrate staff achievements. The Senate's Committee of Staff and Alumni is taking the lead in forming the new Staff Council and is encouraging eligible staff to join. Eligible staff members include full-time and part-time staff members: Civil Service series (including Provisional); College Assistants; Research Foundation employees; Gittleson (COA, CSA, CAA); and HEO Title Series. The first meeting is scheduled Tuesday, September 12 from 1 to 2 p.m., in Room E-501. This meeting will be hybrid (Zoom Link Meeting ID: Meeting ID: 824 7977 9465; Passcode: 531445). CEA Offers Photo Shoot and Video Recording Opportunities for Faculty and Staff

LaGuardia’s Communications and External Affairs Division is hosting a series of “Photo Days” for faculty and staff who need to update their professional headshots! The Photo Days are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., on Wednesday, September 13; Wednesday, October 18; and Wednesday, November 15, in Room E-509. Faculty and staff can reserve a 30-minute timeslot HERE. In addition, we are asking faculty and staff to share a quick on-camera response to the question: “What do you enjoy most about working/teaching at LaGuardia.” The video responses will be used as part of social media campaigns highlight the LaGuardia community. CUNY Welcomes Proposals for Professional Development Conference

CUNY's Professional Development Conference will be hosted virtually on November 9 and 10 and will to provide an opportunity for peer-to-peer learning amongst all faculty and staff. CUNY has provided employees with over 80 sessions over the last few years and participation continues to grow.



This year’s theme will focus on “Bridging the Growing Divide: Working Towards Inclusivity & Consensus”. Please submit your conference session proposal by Friday, September 18 and contact University.Training@cuny.edu with any questions.

LaGuardia's SBDC team joins Congress Member Grace Meng for Small Business Funding Announcement

 

On Thursday, August 17, LaGuardia Community College's Small Business Development Center (SBDC), located at Queens College, was the site of Congress Member Grace Meng's $1 million funding announcement to launch a Small Business Legal Desk at the Queens Chamber of Commerce. The program will provide pro-bono legal help in multiple languages for small businesses throughout Queens. The SBDC Center in Flushing was established in May 2019 through the support and advocacy of the Congress Member. President Kenneth Adams along with LaGuardia's SBDC team let by Director Rosa Figueroa joined the press conference.

LaGuardia Hosts Forum Featuring Global Entrepreneurs and Community Leaders

Latin American & Caribbean International Trade Minorities and Immigrants Business Forum is scheduled on August 30, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at LaGuardia Community College, LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, 31-10 Thomson Avenue. The event, titled “Boost Your Business: Empowering Minorities and Immigrants,” is free and offers an opportunity to learn from global entrepreneurs and community leaders including Fernando Hernandez, Diversity Director for Coca-Cola; Lisa M. Flores, Director Commissioner with the Mayor’s Office of Contract Services; Carlos A. Maceda, CEO of Mount Sinai; and James Hendon, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Veterans,’ and many more. Attendees will learn how to get certified as a minority business, meet Fortune 500 procurement managers, and learn how to sell to the city, state, and federal government.

Annual Golf Outing Tees Off in October

The 10th Annual Mark C. Healy Scholarship Fund Golf Outing is set to take place on Monday, October 2 at Indian Hills Country Club in Northport. Every dollar raised directly benefits students at LaGuardia Community College, by supporting their educational aspirations and empowering them to create brighter futures. Over the last ten years, the event has raised more than $390,000 for students.

CUNY has assembled related reading, mentoring, charity and community service recommendations to commemorate Women’s Equality Day.

HRAssist is Here! 

HRAssist, the new automated time and leave system/attendance system for full-time employees that is replacing the paper process, launched on August 6 for full-time Civil Service employees and on August 13 for full-time PSC, ECP, and Classified Managerial employees. Apple has disclosed quite a few high-profile vulnerabilities recently with warnings to update the software on your devices, e.g., iPhones, iPads, Macs and Watches, with the latest security patches as quickly as possible. These security updates are necessary to protect you against these potentially serious vulnerabilities and help keep the sensitive data stored on your device safe from hackers. iOS updates are Apple’s way of combating the exploitation of your device by patching holes and implementing better stability enhancements.
