Intersection of South Washington Street & West Fifth Street to reopen

This version corrects a street label on the graphic above.

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Progress continues on the BUILD Project in Greenville, with one intersection downtown scheduled to reopen to traffic today.

The intersection of West Fifth Street and South Washington Street is expected to reopen to motorists in an altered traffic pattern this afternoon, roughly six weeks ahead of what was the anticipated date when the intersection closed in late July.

Motorists traveling west on West Fifth Street will be able to turn right onto South Washington, and motorists traveling south on South Washington will now be able to turn left onto West Fifth Street, as pictured above. The section of West Fifth Street between South Washington and Greene Street will remain closed.

There is still work to complete at this intersection, including landscaping and the installation of new traffic signal poles. Until the signal poles are delivered and installed, the intersection will operate temporarily with stop sign control.

If necessary, the intersection will temporarily close for up to a week to allow for the installation of the signal poles upon their arrival, which is tentatively scheduled to be late January or February. The City will notify residents once a firm schedule is set for that work.

This construction is part of the $48.5-million Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Project that began in August 2023. For more information about the BUILD Project, including an updated project timeline and detour routes, visit buildprojects.greenvillenc.gov.
