....Logan County was incorporated in 1887 after it was formed by an act of the Colorado State Legislature on Feb. 25, 1887. Logan County was formerly a part of Weld County. Citizens from the eastern part of the state were required to travel to Greeley, the county seat, to conduct official business. Citizens petitioned the State Legislature to form the new county.
....Later on, Phillips and Sedgwick Counties were created from the original Logan County. In 1908 J. J. Huddart of Denver was retained as architect to complete construction drawings and specifications for a new courthouse. Huddart was educated in England, had an established architectural practice in Denver, Colorado, and designed other courthouses throughout the state.
....Sterling contractors Kaepernik and Jenkins were selected to build the courthouse. Construction was completed in 1910. The white-pressed brick and white stone-trimmed building cost approximately $100,000 to complete.
....On Sat., March 5, 1910, it is estimated that 6,000 persons participated in the formal opening ceremony for the eloquent new structure. On Feb. 22, 1979, the Logan County Courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
....Extensive restorations have been done over the years, including rotunda renovations, stained glass replacement, elevator installation, electrical system upgrades, repair and replication of flooring, windows, doors, trim and other woodwork, restoration of exterior brick, stone and concrete masonry and interior painting using historical color schemes.
....The last and final phase of restoration included the revival of the courthouse dome to the original copper finish and replacement of the flagpole. In 2013, a Flag Day ceremony was held to commemorate the first flag atop the courthouse in many decades. Ten oil paintings by a former local artist, Eugene Carara, hang in the courthouse basement rotunda area and depict historically important events to northeastern Colorado. Restoration funds were provided from History Colorado State Historical Fund, State of Colorado Impact Assistance Funds and Logan County Matching funds.
....The Logan County Commissioners manage and oversee many departments including the Human Resources Department, the Logan County Road and Bridge Department, the Logan County Office of Emergency Management, the Buildings and Grounds Department - involving county buildings maintenance and upkeep, Logan County Fair, Logan County Department of Human Services, Logan County Extension, Logan County Attorney, Logan County Finance Department, Logan County Planning and Zoning Department, Logan County Heritage Center, Logan County Landfill, Veteran’s Service Officer, Logan County Pest Control District, the Logan County Shooting Sports Complex, the Tourist Information Center and Public Information Officer.
....The County Assessor (Peggy Michaels) manages property valuations, the County Treasurer (Patty Bartlett) manages collection of taxes for the county and other taxing entities. The Treasurer is also the Public Trustee and deals with Deeds of Trust i.e. releases and foreclosures. The County Clerk and Recorder (Pam Bacon) records public records and conducts elections and maintains the list of registered voters and also runs the automobile licensing department. The County Sheriff (Brett Powell) is law enforcement. The Logan County Coroner manages unattended deaths and issues death certificates among other duties.
