Seward club helping with Head Start
Seward County Head Start promotes school readiness for children ages 3 through 5 and their families by offering educational, nutritional, health, social and other services. This holiday season, Head Start children and their families were invited to get pictures taken with Santa and enjoy some fun activities sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Seward. They also received a family gift which includes a Pac ‘N’ Save grocery store gift card to use toward their holiday meal.
Each Christmas, Kiwanis Club of Seward provides all the children enrolled in the Head Start program new winter coats, hats, boots and gloves. Additionally, books are purchased throughout the year. Kiwanis members visit Head Start all year long to read to the children, and then the children get to take a copy of the book home.

Newton Kiwanians work on shelter
|
|
The Newton Noon Kiwanis installed this fall a new Kiwanis shelter sign as well as repaired and painted the seating in the Maytag park shelter.
The cold weather did not slow club members down as they wanted the repairs to be completed before the annual Maytag Park Trunk or Treat that is put on by the Newton Park's department. The shelter, built in the 1970's, was in tip-top shape before more than 3,000 kids and parents went through the park picking up candy, hot chocolate and other high-powered sugary substances on Oct. 31. The Newton Kiwanis members handed out popcorn and candy dressed up in normal every day clothing that resembled witches, scarecrows and furry werewolves. A fun night was had by all.

Fort Dodge club packs a lot into one week
|
|
The Fort Dodge Kiwanis Club had a busy week in November.
The week started off with bell ringing for the Salvation Army, then members went shopping with four other service clubs to purchase toiletries and food items for needy organizations. This was the second year for the shopping project. Kiwanis shopped for the Fort Dodge Community School district. Each club had to purchase up to $500 of supplies within seven minutes without going over the amount in order to take the traveling trophy home.
Also that week, the K-Kids held a “Are you Smarter than a K-Kids” event. Questions were asked of the K-Kids and community members. Naturally, the K-Kids were the smartest!! Supper was provided to K-Kids, their families and others in attendance.
Earlier in the fall, members took dictionaries to over 200 third graders.

Omaha Golden K lends hand with food distribution
|
|
Nine Omaha Golden K Kiwanians spent the morning of Oct. 26 at the Food Bank for the Heartland sorting and packing food items for distribution to area food pantries.
The Food Bank works with over 500 partners, including schools, pantries, churches and other non-profits to provide supplemental and emergency food. Its Backpack program provides over 8,300 children’s backpacks weekly to over 250 schools. Kids Café provides over 1,500 after school meals weekly and over 2,500 meals weekly during the summer. Mobile pantries were provided to 376 locations during the last year.
SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) application assistance was provided to over 20,000 individuals and families in Nebraska and Iowa last year. This hands-on event was in observance of Kiwanis One Day of Service during which Kiwanians worldwide participate in service projects.
Nancy Haack, Barbara Lund Irvin, Dale Jones, Ted Killham, Carolyn Law, Jack Pagel, John Roth, Gene Spence and Paul Springsted helped a group of volunteers package frozen chicken parts totaling over 5,000 pounds!

New K-Kids celebrates with charter night, service project
The newest club at West Harrison Elementary School held its charter meeting on Nov. 2. K-Kids is now a part of West Harrison Community Schools in Mondamin, Iowa and the sponsoring club is the Greater Missouri Valley Kiwanis Club. Also attending the K-Kids charter celebration was Immediate Past District Governor Don Fritz (pictured with kids and advisors).
The K-Kids' first project is a book drive for kids' books. Members collected books in November and those will be distributed to the local food pantry mid-December in time for Christmas. Their next project in January will be for Children's Hospital.
