Obedience is a concept most 21st century Christians in America struggle with. For many of us it invokes our fear of failure and judgement. Much of Protestant Christianity has used fear of judgement to get people to obey, to "tow the line." but the opposite often happens. Fear leads to anxiety, shame, and eventually alienation. In this week's lesson from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans we hear the exact opposite approach to obedience. In the first two verses of chapter 12, Paul encapsulates a vision for living the christian life based on gratitude for everything God has done rather than fear of punishment.
Before he tells us what to do, he reminds us of everything God has done for us, and then uses the simple word "therefore." Since God has broken all the boundaries that separate us from God through a lasting, abiding, unbreakable relationship in Christ -- Therefore, brothers and sisters, what do we offer back to God? The foundation of our relationship with God is gratitude for these cords of love binding us together. And God's response is delight. Our relationship with God can never be based in fear but only in mutual self-giving, gratitude and delight.
So this week, as we look at Romans chapter 12:1-2 ask yourself these questions: Do I ever obey God out of fear? What would change if I obeyed God out of gratitude and a desire to please him? What about my life delights God?

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN & YOUTH | |

Sunday school is where St. John's Christian Education formally begins. On September 10th, we will begin the Christian Education School year with our annual Meet & Greet and in-person registration. Please join us in the Canterbury Corner at 9:40 am for group activities and a chance to reconnect after the summer break.
Blessing of the Backpacks will take place on Sunday, September 17th at the 10 am service during the Peace when the Sunday School children rejoin the congregation.
SUNDAY SCHOOL CALENDAR
First Holy Communion will take place in April. Classes begin in January. Anyone with a 2nd graders or above interested in First Holy Communion fo their child should enroll in Sunday School in the fall.
Confirmation will take place in the late spring. Any youth, 7th through 12th grade, interested in Confirmation should enroll in Christian Education and begin attending Youth Group meetings in the fall.

Youth Group for 7th to 12th graders. In addition to our annually scheduled events, we will meet regularly with our youth neighbors at St. John’s in Cold Spring Harbor and Trinity in Northport. There will be service opportunities throughout the year.
Our first meeting will be on Sunday, September 13th at 6:30 pm at St. John's Huntington.
YOUTH GROUP CALENDAR
Our kick-off volunteer event for Youth Group will be at our Church BBQ at Centerport Beach on Sunday, September 17th at 12:00pm. We will be helping cook and run games! All are welcome!

SUNDAY SCHOOL HELP NEEDED | |
We are in need of volunteers to teach and assist on a rotating schedule. Each classroom requires one teacher and one assistant each week, and we can always use an extra hand.

Please join us for a safe and loving offering of prayer and healing on Thursday, September 7th at 7:00 pm.
We believe that not only does Jesus still heal today, but that healing is one of the most powerful ministries of evangelization. Jesus never preached the Gospel of the kingdom of God without demonstrating the kingdom through signs, wonders, and miracles, with healing as the most frequent demonstration of God’s love.
Healing services at St. John’s will include a time of worship and praise, proclamation of the Gospel and preaching, corporate prayer for healing ending with individual prayer teams for healing. Come prepared for breakthrough!

CALLING ALL FUTURE ACOLYTES | |

In the meantime, the boy Samuel continued to serve the Lord, wearing a sacred linen apron. Each year his mother would make a little robe and take it to him when she accompanied her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice... The boy Samuel grew up in the service of the Lord.” 1 Samuel 2:18-21
“Acolyte” means an attendant or follower and Samuel is one of the first examples of an assistant to a priest. Your job as an acolyte is to assist the priest in charge of a worship service and enhance the worship service to help glorify God. You are a minister of the church who is called to serve God.
The Ministry of Acolyte offers a valuable contribution to the worship experience for our services at St. John’s. Acolytes are part of the worship team – the clergy, choir and musicians, Eucharistic ministers, and readers-- who together with the entire congregation join in worshiping God. Together we hear and receive God’s word and Sacraments.
Please contact Fr. Duncan, Deacon Zach or Deacon Claire if you are interested in providing this wonderful service. If we have enough volunteers, we will set up a regular schedule.

All are welcome to the Annual Parish Picnic on Sunday, September 17th from 12:00-3:00 pm at the Senior Beach House at Centerport Beach, 239 Little Neck Road, Centerport. This will be a wonderful chance for all of us to meet our newcomers. The Youth Group will organize fun activities for the children and families.

There will be a sign up sheet available at the back of the church and in the Great Hall during coffee hour.

Just a reminder that all parish events and building use must be submitted to the Parish Office and be approved by the rector or the wardens in his absence.
