Summer Start to Success

It is hard to believe that the Fall 2022 semester is right around the corner. As September approaches, we look forward to welcoming incoming students to Rowan University. Each summer, new students begin their journey during New Student Orientation. As the Graduate Coordinator of Orientation, I personally got to witness incoming first year and transfer students go through this first milestone with a mix of emotions including excitement, fear, stress, and hope for the start of their Rowan Journey.

It was great seeing how engaged and eager our faculty and staff were in preparing our new members of our university community through the information showcase and various sessions. They were able to ease some anxiety for parents and students, while providing reasons why they chose Rowan as their next "home away from home". Seeing them experience these emotions first hand always brings me back to the feeling of how my well-being was enhanced by my undergraduate experience. Interacting with the students personally is one of my favorite parts of orientation. Being able to exchange conversations and stories of my experience here at Rowan with the students brought me so much joy.

Nothing was more uplifting though than to see the students walk away from orientation with new friends, a new-found confidence, and hope for the start of the year. I am grateful for our Peer Referral and Orientation Staff (PROS) student leaders, who provided guidance to the new students. They intentionally built personal connections with their students while getting them acclimaated to life at Rowan University. It was amazing to hear feedback from our PROS members reflecting on their students feeling welcomed and walking away feeling happy and eager after their orientation session was over.

When we welcome back our students in late August for Welcome Week, as a community we can take many steps to make them feel a sense of belonging and feel like they are part of the Rowan family. As these students navigate their six dimensions of well-being during this major transition, provide them the resources, support, and guidance to thrive and succeed towards their academic journey. I know if we commit to providing engaging individual experiences, these student can then create unbelieveable memories and be Rowan PROUD to be a student at our university.

Providing 24/7, free and confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress works. The 988 Lifeline helps thousands of people overcome crisis situations every day. Share this with your friends, peers, and family. Consider going through the Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR) Suicide Preventation Training on Monday, 9/12 from 10 a.m - 2 p.m.
Wednesday, 8/10: 4 p.m.

Join the Governor’s Youth Engagement Series: Mental Health Resources. This will be an informative session where attendees will hear from speakers and learn about the many mental health resources available across New Jersey.

Fresh Check Day is Rowan’s partnership with the Jordan Porco foundation. This uplifting event focuses on promoting mental health resources and suicide prevention for college students with interactive games and booths, from various departments and student groups on campus. There is free food, entertainment, and great prizes! The goal of Fresh Check Day is to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for students to learn about mental health resources on and off campus. Behavior change can be difficult. The process of forming new habits almost always involves setbacks and struggles, and, although setbacks are normal, they are often accompanied by negative emotions and critical self-talk. Often, individuals trying to make lifestyle changes respond to setbacks with harsh self-talk and judgement. They set a goal, fall just short of reaching it, and then experience a variety of negative emotions and critical thoughts about their behavior. In addition to feeling unpleasant, negative emotions also make behavior change more difficult. READ MORE.
PURPOSE

“Put yourself out there, take those opportunities, because if you ask for them and are looking for them, then the opportunities will come.”

Matthew is most proud of SGA’s work with student wellness this year.
“Leaving a legacy behind [with] the new position of AVP of Health, Wellness, and Safety is something that was really meaningful. And I know that bringing some really awesome individuals in the next couple of years, they’re going to do some really great work. So not even necessarily things that I did, but things that we’re going to be putting forward,” Matthew notes.

Alongside the university’s Rowan Thrive initiative, he adds his SGA board has emphasized “the students’ perspective on the need to make wellness a priority at Rowan — physical and mental wellness,” he explains. READ MORE.

COMMUNITY
Welcome Week events are a vital follow-up to Orientation and will continue to grow the students' knowledge of campus resources and organizations. There are opportunities to support a sense of belonging and engage in various campus activities, organizations, and services. A diverse array of events are being offered from 9/1 - 9/11 to support well-being and support in acclimating back to the university community.

The Office of Accessibility Services and Department of Social Justice, Inclusion, and Conflict Resolution and the Center for Neurodiversity are looking for presenters for Access, Inclusion, and Social Justice Week this upcoming October 24 -29. The week is about the equity and inclusion of all members of the Rowan University community and learning how we can better provide supports and resources to those with disabilities and intersecting identities. This is a week dedicated to presentations, activities, and panels to discuss disability, inclusion, and social justice issues.
