What's Cool in Our Schools

Delicious Donuts and Math? Why Not?

At Idyllwilde Elementary Future Ready Academy, Mrs. Vurro’s 4th graders explored the concept of multiplying fractions by a whole number by using a recipe and making donuts!

They had to triple the recipe in order to make enough! Sounds like a delicious way to learn! We bet dollars to donuts that these students will remember this lesson in math for a long time to come!

Oviedo High Recognized for Work with DBQ Project

The DBQ Project provides teachers with both the content and strategies for increasing literacy among students, particularly with informational text forms. Much of the FAST testing for 10th graders relies on being able to read and understand informational text.

In order to support the English curriculum, the OHS World History teachers embraced the use of DBQs (Document Based Questions). Oviedo High School is the only high school in Seminole County Public Schools recognized for the implementation of the DBQ project consistently and at a high level of rigor.

The World History teacher team implementing the DBQ Project include Ms. Cox, Mr. Wainscott, Dr. Furgione, Ms. Dilmore, and Ms. Darling. All DBQ Project DBQs include a hook exercise to engage students in the question they will answer.

"Hooks," which students do before they see any documents, include clarifying vocabulary, considering controversial questions, or ranking the importance of events or concepts. All DBQs also include a short background essay that builds vocabulary and context to help students understand ideas they will encounter in the informational text documents. Building context helps to level the playing field by ensuring that everyone has a contextual introduction to the historical question under consideration.

Way to go, Lions!

Eastbrook Elementary Hosts Special Visitors

STOP, DROP, and ROLL! Kindergarteners at Eastbrook Elementary got a visit from the Seminole County Fire Dept. station 23!

The firefighters talked to the students about fire safety, what to do if there is a fire in your home, and other safety tips. The students got to climb in the fire truck and Mrs. Moreno and Ms. Irizarry got to race to try on the fire gear! Thank you Station 23! We have incredible support and we truly appreciate all of the ways Seminole County comes together to educate the future of our community.

Historical Marker Placed at Jackson Heights Middle School

This week, we were thrilled to host the unveiling of a new historical marker at Jackson Heights Middle School celebrating the history of the community where their school resides.

The JHMS jazz band did a wonderful job welcoming members of the community, Oviedo Preservation Society, and even one of the first teachers at the school when it was Jackson Heights Elementary.

We had many guests at the ceremony who attended the school years ago and were part of this historic occasion.
