One More Week
Is the cup half empty or is it half full? You can look at this week as if your summer is almost over and you have to come back to school. I challenge each one of you to shift that mindset. I challenge you to change those simple words of "have to" into "get to". You get to have the opportunity to come back to school. You get to make new connections and learn something that you have never learned before. One more week before you "get to" come back to school. More information will come in our newsletter next week to be sure you are prepared for our first day. #beholdblueandgold

Orientation Days
A heartfelt THANK YOU to each and everyone for making Sonora's Orientation such a success. The entire process was smooth and efficient. Thank you to our staff who displayed a commitment to excellence that is genuine and with the understanding that orientation can be stressful at times. We sincerely hope that our students and parents felt as though they were valued and treated to the values Sonora espouses.

A very special thank you goes to Ms. Virden and our amazing ASB students for the vision, coordination, set-up, and implementation of the event. Ms. Virden's fingerprints were all over our Orientation Days, and our students reflected our high ASB standards and expectations.

Thank you to our Link Crew under the direction of Mrs. Viveros. Link Crew students were just warming up on how we are beginning to connect with our Class of 2026 on the first day of school. Welcome to the Raider Family Class of 2026!! #beholdblueandgold

Counseling News
Aeries Online Course Schedule Review
At this time, students may log in to their Aeries accounts to view their course requests for the 22/23 school year. Please note that period and teacher information will not be visible until after Orientation.

Schedule Changes
Schedule changes can be discussed during student Orientation. Counselors will be available to assist you at that time. After Orientation, ALL schedule changes must be done online using the 2022-23 Sonora High School Course Request Change Form. Students may only request schedule changes using the Google form beginning August 15th. This form may be submitted once and can be accessed only by using the student's FJUHSD email. This is the student's nine-digit ID number, for example, 123456789@fjuhsd.org. Any request submitted via email will not be approved. If you have emailed your counselor, please see a counselor in person at Orientation, or resubmit your request using the 2022-23 Sonora High School Course Request Change Form.

Leveling Down or Up
After the first week of school, students must complete the Honors/AP/IB Level Up/Down Teacher Conversation Form, which will be available in the Guidance Office. You may also find our school rules and regulations regarding course changes and leveling guidelines in our Student Handbook as well as Board Policy.

Seniors Requesting Free Periods
Seniors who are on track for graduation and received a CAASPP score of 3 or 4 “Meets and Exceeds” in the subjects: English and Math may request to have a free period. Free periods are only available in periods 1 and 6. Classes that will take a student off A-G eligibility will not be dropped per AB 1012. Students should email their counselors to request a free period. If the free period is approved, students must schedule a meeting with themselves, their parents, and an administrator (APPS or Principal) to fill out the necessary paperwork. Free periods cannot occur after the last day of the first quarter of the semester as per Board Policy. After the first quarter, students drop a course with the letter grade of “F”. FJUHSD does not recommend students take free periods as it can affect college acceptance, competitiveness, and/or readiness.

Counselor Appointments
Please note that counselors can not schedule individual appointments until after the second week of school when student schedule changes are resolved. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.  Please click here for Counselor Contact Information.

Attendance
Prompt and daily attendance at school has a direct bearing on academic success. Students are expected to be on time and attend all classes. Parents are expected to ensure that students attend school and are on time for school each day. If your child is going to be late, absent, or leaving early, let us know as soon as possible by phone, note, or in person. Absences must be cleared within 3 days or they become truancies and cannot be excused. It is important for both parents and students to check attendance on Aeries frequently.

You are welcome to contact the office if you need help accessing Aeries.

562-266-2088: Spanish Calls – All Day Absence Calls Only

  • Absences that have not been cleared within three (3) days = Truancy.
  • Tardies beyond thirty (30) minutes = Absence.
  • Leaving campus without an Off Campus Transfer Slip, including during break and passing periods = Truancy (Check in and check out with the Attendance Office. No exceptions.)
  • Once a student is excused for five days in a row due to illness, a doctor’s note must be obtained for excusal on the fifth day. Any absences more than 5 days in a row require a doctor’s note for the absence to still be considered excused.
  • If your child will be absent more than 3 days in a row, contact the attendance office directly.
  •  Excessive tardies and truancies will result in detention or Saturday School.
  • Students need a valid reason for being late to school or absent. Traffic, oversleeping, alarm malfunction, studying for exams, family vacation, and personal matters are not valid reasons. See the complete list of valid reasons for being late and absent on the Sonora High School Attendance Procedures page.
  • To report an absence, tardy or early release, a parent/guardian must provide the student’s full name, date of absence/tardy/leaving early, reason, and parent/guardian name and phone number.

The Assistant Principal of Student Services, Jina Jackson, is available for consultation regarding attendance concerns and issues.
