This Week on Campus

From the largest Grandparents Day in GH history to literary celebrations to Literary Character Dress Day, this week was full of smiles and excitement in the Lower School.

Letter from the Headmaster

Dear Spartan Families,

Faculty and staff enjoyed getting to meet and have your parents on campus this week. Grandparents’ days were a huge success! Grandparents learned more about what we do each day at our academy, got to spend some time with their grandchildren, and had a special look into their class. Thank you to our PSO for your hard work that helped make it possible.

Looking ahead to the next week, I hope that everyone has a restful week off. Hopefully, you and your scholars can gather with family and friends and spend quality time with one another without having to worry about early carline drop off, homework, and the race to bedtime, and we can return refreshed on November 28th.

Operational Updates

Attendance

Attendance matters! Here’s why:

  • Our campus funding is dependent on scholars attending school. This is the number one way WH receives funding from the state.
  • The amount we receive from the state is based on our average daily attendance. Every day your scholar attends school our campus receives over $45 in state funding.

How you can help us:

  • If your scholar is out sick, please send an email or doctor's note to our attendance mailbox at attendance@greatheartswesternhills.org for each day(s) your scholar is out sick.
  • Please be sure to have your scholar in their classes when attendance is taken each day at 9:50 AM.

Nurse's Corner

ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES FOR ILLNESS

A student should not come to school if any of these symptoms are present in the previous 24 hours:

  • Elevated temperature of 100.0 degrees or greater. The child shall remain fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications before returning to school.
  • Quick onset of cold, sore throat, or persistent cough. Persistent cough interrupts the child’s ability to concentrate and is disruptive to the classroom learning environment.
  • Vomiting, nausea, or severe abdominal pain.
  • Repeated diarrhea the day or night before school
  • Pus-like discharge from the nose or eyes -contagious conditions.
  • Red or inflamed eyes or discharge from the eyes (conjunctivitis).
  • Suspected scabies, impetigo, acute skin rashes or skin lesion or draining wound not contained with use of a band aid.
  • Lethargic behavior.

In the event that your child becomes ill while at school, we respectfully ask that you or your designee pick your child up as soon as possible and within one hour of being notified.

Winter Concerts

December 2nd and 9th

Dear Western Hills Families,

Our grand GHWH Winter Concert is approaching! We are so excited for your family to experience

the fruits of your scholars’ hard work, as they have been diligently preparing their concert music

throughout the semester.

  • Our 3 - 5th Winter Concert will take place on Friday, December 9th at 6:00 PM at the Edgewood Theater of Performing Arts, located on 402 Lance St. 78237.

All sections of each grade will be performing together as a choir.

Students are required to stay for the entire length of their concert because they will be graded on not just their performance but also on their concert etiquette.

More details about the call time for students will be given as the concert date approaches.

Community Investment Year To Date

Nov 18, 2022: $84,406 Raised to Date, with 30% Family Participation

We are starting our season of Thanksgiving early because we are thankful for our families who have contributed to our Community Investment Campaign.

Remember that when you see the round GHWH stickers on vehicles in carline or at Dutch Brothers Coffee, that family has stepped into the funding gap we have on campus.

Whether you have given $5 once or made a monthly donation, we are thankful for your support of our teachers and facilities!

Advocacy Corner

Congratulations to our Great Hearts parent advocates – Laura Martinez (GH Western Hills parent) and America Gies (GH Northern Oaks and GH Online parent)!

Along with GH Family Advocacy Manager Bridie Chaudoir, these parent advocates were recognized for participating in the national charter school “Back Off Rally” held in Washington, D.C. in May. The Policy Innovators in Educators Network (or PIE Network) named Texas’ team’s effort as “one of the best defensive advocacy strategies in the country” for raising awareness about the U.S. Department of Education’s proposed rules that would choke off charter school funding.

Thank you, Laura and America, for your willingness to travel to our nation’s capital and share your voices in support of charter schools!

Our GH scholars are making tremendous achievements. Every child deserves to thrive — and with strong parent support, we ensure they can.

The Texas Legislature is preparing to convene at the start of 2023. Our elected leaders make big decisions about public education, so they need to hear directly from parents about the positive difference that charter schools like ours are making.

Please join in participating in Capitol Connections Week. In early December, you’ll have the opportunity to meet virtually with a state lawmaker who represents you — alongside a small group of fellow charter school parents, educators, and other supporters.

The Texas Public Charter Schools Association is hosting this event and will handle all the logistics, including sending you all the necessary information. In just one 30-minute meeting, you can make a huge difference for students by simply telling your story.

We encourage you to sign up here. You deserve to be heard!
