Volume 9 - Issue 04 | April 2021
Author Event: Jane Healey
Please join us and other Massachusetts libraries as we celebrate the launch of local author Jane Healey's newest book on Zoom.

Tuesday, April 6th at 7pm

We remember Jane's visit to the Nevins Library to discuss The Beantown Girls, and now in her latest book, The Secret Stealers, we return to World War II Europe.

In this new book, a female American spy in Nazi-occupied France finds purpose behind enemy lines in a novel of unparalleled danger, love, and daring.

Signed copies of the book are available through Haley Booksellers website.

Registration is required for this event as well.
History Of The Merrimack River & How To Clean It Up
Local author and journalist Dyke Hendrickson will discuss his new book, Merrimack: The Resilient River, An Illustrated Narrative of the Most Historic River in New England

He'll highlight the dramatic life of the Merrimack River, from the colorful days of the Native Americans to its current status as one of the most scenic recreational waterways in New England.

April 21st at 7pm
Celebrating with "Poetree" in National Poetry Month
It's the twenty-fifth anniversary of National Poetry Month!

At the Nevins Library we are putting up a "Poetree" this year to help us celebrate.

The tree will have bare branches and be set up in the library entrance. We hope that you all will fill the branches with poems!

How can you do that?

You may share with us a favorite poem of yours, or some verses of a longer poem you love. Or perhaps you write poetry and wish to share an original work!

Submissions for our “Poetree” can be either by emailing Krista McLeod or may be dropped off at the Main Desk of the Library. We will then prepare the poems and hang them up. Please mark your email or physical entry with "Poetry Month.”

Let’s celebrate the art of language and verse by filling our tree with words.
Poem & Drawing by Shel Silverstein - Falling Up
There is no better poetry
Than words hanging in a - Oak
Or possibly a Birch
Or Maple, ooh, or a Dogwood

We'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed a square (or more in some cases!) to our Friendship Quilt.

The response has been incredible. In fact, we have received so many squares, that we will actually be making several quilts of varying sizes!

Also, the hard work and beautiful craftmanship put into these squares means that we could not, in good conscious, display these quilts outside, nor will they be ready for display in April.

We hope you will bear with us as we work to assemble these quilts and have them ready to display within the library this summer.

We can't wait for you to see them!
Eat Out and Support the Friends of the Library!
Thanks to all of you who helped out the Library by enjoying dinner at Chateau Restaurant in Andover last month. The Friends raised much-needed funds to support the Library’s Summer Reading programs this year.

Our next Support our Local Restaurants event will be at The Irish Cottage on April 21st from 4 - 10 pm.

To support this fundraiser all you need to do is get take-out or dine-in at the Irish Cottage that evening, and present a flyer when you pay your check so that your server knows you are there to support the Friends of the Nevins Library!

You can pick up a flyer at the Main or Reference Desk of the Library, or call and ask for one using the Library’s Curbside Pickup service (call 978-722-2666.)

What's Happening in Children's?
Parents, We Need Your Help!
We want to make this a great summer for your family at the library, so we’ve created a brief survey to find out what offerings would best suit you. You'll find the link below – and thanks for your input!

Meanwhile, we have plenty of great programs and features for April – including our newly-minted “Virtual Children’s Department,” where you can learn about our new books as well as programs and services. Have fun visiting the “room,” which is posted on the front page of the library’s website and on the Children’s Department Facebook page – just click on a book or other link to explore what we have to offer! We’ll regularly change the display of new books in the virtual room, so you’ll want to visit often and keep up to date with our wonderful collection!

This month we’ll also have some unique programs, including a Poetry Workshop, a Family Craft Time, and storytimes focused on Passover and on Ramadan, as well as our usual array of other storytimes, book groups, science and cooking projects, and programs for babies and preschoolers.

Last but not least, don’t forget to pick up one of our “Book a Craft” kits, which contain themed books and crafts -- either come to the Children’s Department to get them, or call us at 978-686-4080 x26 to “book” your kit and arrange to pick it up. As always, we love to see you in the Children’s Department!
