MA eBook Project - Methuen as a Pilot Library

The Nevins Library is proud to announce that it has been chosen as one of fifty libraries statewide to pilot a new initiative to bring digital e-books and content to all types of libraries in the Commonwealth.

Loaning books has always been the most basic service of any library, but in the 21st century the method of delivering that service is changing.  It is obvious that information and access to that information in all its formats is the key to sustaining the mission of the library into the future.   Libraries nationwide are exploring ways to put the

expanding amount of digital content into the hands and onto the devices of their users.

To help local libraries provide better service to local residents, the Massachusetts Library System along with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, have contracted with vendors BiblioLabs and Baker & Taylor to provide e-books and other electronic content that will have wide appeal to readers and researchers in public, academic, school and special libraries around the state.  The pilot project is also funded, in part, through a federal grant through the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Who's Tracking You Online? The "Big Data"  Quiet Revolution
Tuesday, February 4 at 7pm

Join us on February 4th at 7pm to hear a presentation and have a discussion about "big data."  This is an important subject that is very much in the news... every search and keystroke on all the various digital devices we use paints a picture of us to the data collectors in the world today. Our online activities help define us to retailers, health care professionals and even the government. How does this affect us and what has happened to that elusive concept of privacy? Join Greg Page, CEO of Merrimack Analytics for an interactive discussion of these critical issues and find ways to minimize your online footprint.

Lewis Hine Project:  Stories of the Lawrence Children by Joe Manning

The Nevins Library will be hosting a unique exhibit of historic photos from the era when children routinely worked under difficult conditions in mills in the Merrimack Valley.  This collection of photos is called "The Lewis Hine Project:  Stories of the Lawrence Children".

Joe Manning, a scholar and author from Western Massachusetts, has compiled and researched the stories behind the pictures originally taken by Lewis Hine depicting the struggles of children as workers in the mills of the early 1900's.  This photographic exhibition will be available starting in January and continuing until March 31, 2014.  Check the website for information regarding a talk by Joe Manning scheduled for February.
