Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce _1_.png

Join us at Steubenville Country Club on Tuesday, May 17,

for the 2022 Chamber Golf Classic!

The Chamber golf outing is a favorite among many local businesses and organizations. It's been around for over 30 years, yet never gets stale. New things are being added and improved each year. It brings businesspeople, golfers, volunteers, and sponsors together for a great day of friendly competition, food, drink, and lots of networking.

While it may sound cliche, many deals are made on (or near) the golf course. You never know who you'll meet while eating breakfast, volunteering, or working your business' tent.

Last year, over 100 were in attendance, including those who played, volunteered, came for dinner and prizes, or just stopped by to say hello.

The Chamber would like to personally invite you to come and hang out for the day. And while you're at it, don't forget to register for the dinner. We hope to see you there!

How to Change:

The Science of Getting from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be

by Katy Milkman

Award-winning Wharton Professor and Choiceology podcast host Katy Milkman has devoted her career to the study of behavior change. In this groundbreaking book, Milkman reveals a proven path that can take you from where you are to where you want to be.

Change comes most readily when you understand what's standing between you and success and tailor your solution to that roadblock. If you want to work out more but find exercise difficult and boring, downloading a goal-setting app probably won't help. But what if, instead, you transformed your workouts so they became a source of pleasure instead of a chore? Turning an uphill battle into a downhill one is the key to success.

Drawing on Milkman's original research and the work of her world-renowned scientific collaborators, How to Change shares strategic methods for identifying and overcoming common barriers to change, such as impulsivity, procrastination, and forgetfulness.

Today in History

- May 6, 1935 -

FDR creates the Works Progress Administration (WPA)

From History: On May 6, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs an executive order creating the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

The WPA was just one of many Great Depression relief programs created under the auspices of the Emergency Relief Appropriations Act, which Roosevelt had signed the month before.

The WPA, the Public Works Administration (PWA) and other federal assistance programs put unemployed Americans to work in return for temporary financial assistance. Out of the 10 million jobless men in the United States in 1935, 3 million were helped by WPA jobs alone.

This Week is National Small Business Week.

Did you know?

  • Small businesses have accounted for 2 out of every 3 jobs added in the past 25 years.
  • Large businesses, those with 500 or more employees...had big employment declines during the recession.
  • However, their recovery was more limited [than small businesses].
  • During the first two quarters of 2020, employment by large businesses fell by 6.8 million.
  • In the four quarters following the recession, employment by large businesses rose by 3.1 million, offsetting 46 percent of the decline.
  • Despite the jobs lost during the recession, large businesses generated 6.7 million net new jobs over the past 25 years.
  • During the same period, small businesses generated 12.9 million net new jobs, meaning small businesses have accounted for 66 percent of employment growth over the last 25 years.

Commerce Secretary warns that delays on semiconductor aid could limit Intel's Ohio project

From The Columbus Dispatch: Congressional foot-dragging on federal aid to the semiconductor business is putting thousands of jobs at risk in Ohio and could end up limiting Intel's investment in the state, a Biden administration official said Tuesday.

"The stakes are very high for Ohio. Ohio will stand to lose a great deal if the bill doesn’t pass or if takes Congress too long to pass," Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo told Ohio reporters on a conference call.

"The reality is that Intel and other companies are making their decision around where to expand now and if Congress takes until the end of the year to pass this, Ohio will face a very real risk of losing jobs and losing investment," she said.

Intel announced in January a $20 billion project to build two semiconductor factories in Licking County that will employ 3,000 workers. The Silicon Valley company has said its investment could reach $100 billion and that it could eventually build eight factories, making it one of the largest semiconductor sites in the world.

U.S. Chamber Calls on Congress to Support Small Business Growth

Washington, D.C. —In honor of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is calling on Congress to embrace a set of five free enterprise principles that emphasize what small business owners, founders, and entrepreneurs need from government to grow and thrive.

America’s 32.5 million small businesses account for more than 99% of all U.S. companies and employ just under 47% of private sector employees. In the last two years, entrepreneurship has taken off at unprecedented levels, leading to the largest increase in new business applications in recorded history. To sustain this trend, policymakers need to nurture small business growth.

The Small Business ‘Bill of Rights’ asks our elected leaders to provide an environment where small business can:

Hire and manage employees

Establish the terms on which they do business

Be protected against frivolous lawsuits

Benefit from their business and direct its future

Be free of onerous regulations
