Check out the Childrens' and Young Adult programs which are kicking into gear this month as well.  Literacy Volunteers of Methuen is looking for tutors for adults and will be conducting a training workshop this month and into October.  The Friends Booksale is scheduled for the end of the month so be sure to put that on your calendar for some great book bargains.  All the details and more can be found below so enjoy and we hope to see you in the library soon

What is an Online Database and Why Do I Need One?
In this electronic age it is only fitting that Nevins Library patrons should be able to access information when they need it, day or night.  Your library card is the key that unlocks the many types of services which are available to you from the comfort of your own home computer. While some of these resources are provided by the state there are many others that are only available to Methuen patrons.  Not only can you do research but you can also download music and electronic books through the Freegal and Overdrive by entering through the Nevins website, nevinslibrary.org. Click on the Reference tab to reach the list of online resources for your research needs.  Here is a short list of the most popular and powerful databases we have to offer:

Consumer Reports Online - for consumer information
Mango Lanuages - Learn a foreign language or use the program to     learn English
Chilton's Auto Repair - look at schematic documents or research  technical bulletins for makes and models of cars and trucks
Learning Express - test prep database for learning guides and test practice for  SAT, PSAT, LSAT, MCAT, TOEFL and other professional exams
Cypress Resume - a resume building database to assist you in developing a professional looking resume
A to Z Databases - a business database for researching companies, developing marketing lists or conducting  a job search
Safari - Computer and Business ebooks you can read on your computer or print from (not downloadable)

Please take a look at these and the other information based resources that are also provided by the Mass. Library System as well as the Mass. Board of Library Commissioners.  You may be surprised at what the Nevins Library has become. It is your bridge to knowledge and your library card has become your key to the universe?.or at least a big chunk of it!!
Become a Literacy Volunteer

Literacy Volunteers of Methuen is once again having tutor training classes starting in September.  This program is based at the Nevins Library and is geared towards adult ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) students.  Students meet with their volunteer tutors in the library and review lessons which have been designed with their individual needs in mind.  Currently there is a long wait list of students wanting a tutor to help them improve their English.  If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer opportunity why not join our tutor training classes in September  and start helping a fellow community member learn English.  For more information contact Sue @ 978-686-4080 x 32 or litvolmeth@gmail.com.
