Children's Health

Drs. Corinne Catarozoli, Cori Green, and Stephen Oh received a $100k gift from the Chaus family to support the expansion of Pediatrics Psychology to WCM Pediatric Surgical Service. The expansion will allow patients undergoing surgery access to mental health care concurrently with their medical treatment. Families will be able to meet with a psychologist pre-operatively for support with preparing their child for surgery, managing anticipatory anxiety, addressing potential behavioral concerns, and screen for any psychosocial concerns. Read more here!

Appointments

Dr. Juan Manuel Pascual Named Chief of the Division of Child Neurology

Dr. Juan Pascual, a leading pediatric neurologist, has been appointed chief of the Division of Child Neurology in the Department of Pediatrics at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children’s Hospital and Weill Cornell Medicine, effective March 1, 2024.

 In his new role, Dr. Pascual will oversee the child and neonatal neurology divisions with a focus on increasing access to high-quality care, expanding scientific research, and recruiting and developing faculty, clinicians and researchers. Dr. Pascual was recruited to Weill Cornell Medicine as a professor of pediatrics, of neurology and of neuroscience in the Feil Family Brain and Mind Research Institute and an affiliate faculty member in the Sage School of Philosophy in the College of Arts and Sciences on Cornell’s Ithaca campus. He will also grow the rare brain disorders program for patients with undiagnosed, complex or severe neurological diseases. Read more here!

Dr. Marianne Nellis was named Chair of the Pediatric Critical Care Blood Research Network (BloodNet), a consortium of over 200 researchers from 11 countries who seek to improve outcomes in critically ill children by supporting and performing research in transfusion medicine, hemostasis, and blood management.

Dr. Sallie Permar was highlighted on WCM Newsroom for her experimental mRNA vaccine against human cytomegalovirus (CMV), a common virus that can infect babies during pregnancy. This vaccine elicited some of the most promising immune responses to date of any CMV vaccine candidate. Read more here!

Dr. Perdita Permaul attended the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology held in Washington, DC from February 23-26, 2024. She presented and led various presentations and sessions.



Ms. Anita Mesi, Chief Administrator Officer, returned this year to teach "Finances in Academic Medicine" at the Weill Cornell Medicine Leadership in Academic Medicine Program (LAMP), attended by junior faculty across Departments, who serve or plan to serve in leadership roles at Weill Cornell Medicine and/or academic medicine. Learn more about LAMP here!

Dr. Rachel Kowalsky presented a keynote address on Deconstructing A Clinical Practice Guideline: Race and Urinary Tract Infection in Infants and Children at the Independence Blue Cross Regional Coalition to Eliminate Race-Based Medicine's Community of Practice Series Kickoff in Philadelphia, PA on February 13, 2023.

Dr. Adin Nelson gave grand grounds for the Department of Pediatrics at the Brooklyn Hospital Center on Evidence-Based Diagnostic Testing; Should You Check that Lab, What Does that Result Mean, and How do you Know?

Dr. Nicole Kucine gave a talk entitled "Myeloproliferative Neoplasms in Young Patients" at the NYU Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology monthly hematology case conference/lecture series on Feb 12, 2024 and a talk with the same title to the Stanford Medicine Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellows teaching series on Feb 16, 2024.

Dr. Jennifer Salant, Dr. Teresa Vente, Nurse Practitioner Claire Slusarz, and Chaplain Stephen Douglas were invited on February 9, 2024, to serve as panelists for a virtual interactive presentation titled, “Speaking with Children about Death and Serious Illness” to the African Palliative Care Association (APCA), based in Uganda. Over 100 participants from countries around Africa and the world attended, sharing their experiences and engaging in a dialogue about the topic. The session was very well-received, and PACT was invited to return to APCA for future sessions!

Dr. Zenna Solomon (Pediatric Pulmonary Fellow) was accepted to attend the 2023 RAPID Mentoring and Career Development Conference.

Dr. Damla Gonullu-Rotman (Pediatric Medical Genetics Fellow) will present her poster on, Digenic Inheritance of Pathogenic Variants In DICER1 and CACNA1 Can Present As Glow Syndrome at the American College of Medical Genetics 2024 Annual Meeting in Toronto on March 14, 2024.

Dr. Jason Nagata a pediatrician scientist from University of California San Francisco who trained with with the WCM Physician Scientist Training Program was featured in The New York Times for his work on eating disorders in boys. Read full article here!
