Parents, grandparents, foster parents, childcare providers, aunts, uncles, babysitters and anyone who plays a caregiving role in the life of a child of any age are all invited to participate in a free conference being offered Saturday, March 16th, in Jensen Hall at the Lassen County Fairgrounds. This year the annual event’s theme is From Chaos to Connection.
Raising children is the most rewarding, but also the most stressful job there is and the 2024 Family Connections Conference, which runs from 10:00a.m., until 4:00p.m., is a workshop to build emotional intelligence while raising kind, confident, and resilient kids.
| |
|
The guest speaker will be author Stephanie Pinto, from Sydney Australia.
This day is designed for participants to walk away feeling refreshed, inspired and with some new tools to add to their toolbox.
Attendees can expect food, conversation and great information and according to organizers, parents, childcare providers and educators will all greatly benefit from this event.
Advance registration is highly preferred so that accurate seating, food and materials can be prepared. However, walk-ins will not be turned away. Childcare will not be available.
The Family Connections Conference is a collaborative effort among many community organizations including the Lassen Childcare Planning Council, Lassen County Child and Family Services, Lassen County Office of Education, Lassen HEART and Sierra Cascade Family Opportunities.

Weather Bulletin: Storms Expected
to Bring Heavy Snow to Valley Floor
Forecasters at the National Weather Service office in Reno have issued an Urgent Winter Weather message for Lassen County, along with eastern Plumas and eastern Sierra counties, including Susanville, Loyalton, Westwood, Sierraville, and Portola as a major winter storm is set to drop up to a foot of snow here in the valley by week’s end.
The Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Wednesday through late Saturday night.
| |
|
Blizzard conditions are likely, beginning early Thursday morning with snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet for Plumas, Sierra and western Lassen Counties, and up to 12 inches along Highway 395 here in the Honey Lake Valley.
Localized snowfall totals of four to eight feet are possible near Lassen Park, Yuba Pass, and Lake Davis.
Winds throughout the storm will be gusting as high as 70mph.
Travel could be impossible due to blizzard conditions. Very strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines.
Storms of this magnitude are rare and capable of closing major roads and damaging power infrastructure for extended periods of time. Make sure you have food, water, and a secondary heat source for more than several days in your home in case of extended power outages. If you must travel, do it before the storm arrives as travel may be impossible once the storm arrives.

Lassen County Fair and Livestock Show in 1940 ~ From an Eastman Studios photo | |
Lassen Fair Will Be Held
No Conflict Seen with Defense Rules
February 27, 1942
The Lassen County Livestock Show and rodeo, for years one of the biggest attractions in this area, will be held this year as originally planned, unless a conflict with military regulations should be unexpectedly arise, the advisory committee announced here today.
It had been feared previously that the fair might have been cancelled because of conflict with defense regulations on the Pacific coast.
The recommendation that the fair be presented as usual will be made to the county board of supervisors at the next regular meeting. The board already has given its stamp of approval to tentative plans for the show.
Tentative dates set for the fair by the committee in charge are August 19-23.
The decision to hold the big show came after members of the advisory committee attended a meeting of the directors of twenty-three northern California fairs at Marysville last Saturday. It was disclosed at the time that the staging of the smaller shows would conflict with none of the defense regulations prescribed for the area by army officials, and it was recommended that wherever [possible the county fairs be held.
Definite plans for the Lassen show will be made this Saturday at a meeting of the directors of the Quincy, McArthur, Cedarville, Lakeview and Lassen shows here. A premium list best suited for all represented fairs also will be drawn at the time.
