San Jose Workers Strike Averted

I am gratified that this week the City of San José was able to reach an agreement with our two largest labor unions that provides stability to the city and our employees and averts a strike.

This accomplishment not only reflects our commitment to workers but also demonstrates our commitment to the prosperity of our city. The agreement stretches our resources and may require some tough budgetary choices in the years ahead, but our employees are worth it.

I believe that our goal should be to have the best trained, best compensated work force in public service. The agreement is a testament to the strength of unity and collaboration, and I appreciate all that city workers do to make San José a better place to live.

Celebrating Community at Moitozo

Yesterday my team and I were at Moitozo Park to celebrate our community and provide free food to residents from some great food trucks in one of the city’s best parks. I had some really constructive conversations with local residents and made some really good connections! Be sure to sign up for my newsletter at d4sanjose.com to find out about our upcoming events!

Cinequest and a Fantastic New Film

Founded in 1990, Cinequest is one of San Jos’s great traditions. Last night I attended the screening of an incredible film called “Fresh Kills,” written and directed by Jennifer Esposito. It tells a brilliant mafia story from the perspective of the women. Hearing what she went through to make this film was just as inspiring as the movie itself and it was my honor to meet Jennifer and tell her how much I enjoyed “Fresh Kills!”

Grants for AAPI Owned Independent Restaurants

National ACE Opens Applications for the AAPISTRONG Restaurant Fund in Partnership with Grubhub to Help with the Growth and Expansion of AAPI-owned Restaurants

Independent restaurants across the country can apply for a grant up to $50,000 through the AAPISTRONG Restaurant Fund made possible by the Grubhub Community Fund.

The National Asian/Pacific Islander American Chamber of Commerce & Entrepreneurship (National ACE) today announced the third year of the AAPISTRONG Restaurant Fund to support independent, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI)-owned restaurants, a program enabled by a grant from the Grubhub Community Fund. With the industry facing ongoing economic challenges, this funding will allow AAPI restaurateurs to take their business to the next level through development ideas such as infrastructure improvements, e-commerce and technology, employee benefits, and operations streamlining. Ultimately, this will help AAPI entrepreneurs to scale their businesses, secure their futures, and also give back to the life of their neighborhoods by fostering safe and enjoyable places to gather.

Interested restaurants can learn more about the AAPISTRONG Restaurant Fund and the full application process at https://www.aapistrong.com/current-grants

Virtual Workshop: Investing in the Future of Bay Area Housing

The Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA) invites members of the public to attend one of two upcoming virtual workshops about a proposed regional housing measure. BAHFA was created to help solve the affordable housing shortage and is considering a bond measure for the November 2024 ballot to invest in building and preserving affordable homes.

The Bay Area needs to create more affordable housing — a lot of it. The region must plan for more than 180,000 new affordable homes by 2035. Tackling this problem in the coming years is key to making the region more affordable for the nearly 8 million people who call the Bay Area home. Building at this scale and meeting the affordable housing demand is a tall order — one that will require robust, regionally coordinated public investment.

These virtual workshops will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn about the proposed bond, provide feedback and ask questions.

Virtual Workshop:

  • Workshop #2
  • Thursday, August 24, 2023
  • 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Join via Zoom video
  • Meeting ID: 819 8658 6787
  • Passcode: 683004
  • Join via phone (one tap mobile): +16699006833,,81986586787#,,,,*683004#
  • Join via phone: (408) 638-0968

For those unable to attend, a meeting recording will be posted to mtc.ca.gov/HousingBond. Note that the presentation content of both workshops will be the same.

Who's making a big difference in our community? A great teacher, business owner, a police officer who goes beyond the call of duty. Maybe there's someone spending their free time organizing creek clean-ups or blanket drives for the unhoused... If you've got someone special in your neighborhood, let us know by nominating them to be a District Hero!
