New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the State “shut down seven unlicensed cannabis dispensaries in Cayuga, Oswego, and Wayne counties that were also illegally selling cannabis to underage customers, utilizing new enforcement powers granted to the Attorney General by legislation signed into law by the Governor as part of the FY24 Enacted Budget.”
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley released a draft ballot explanation for a proposed initiated measure that would repeal South Dakota’s Medical Marijuana Program.
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita issued a warning and advice to consumers to help avoid scams associated with the severe weather across the state.
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced her office “sued Vision Solar LLC and one of its lead generators, Solar Xchange LLC, and its owner Mark Getts, for violations of the Federal Trade Commission Act, the Federal Telephone Solicitation Rule, the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act, and the Arizona Telephone Solicitations Act in connection with unlawful telemarketing sales calls and misrepresentations relating to the sale and installation of residential solar panels in Arizona and beyond.”
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced his office is “suing a Dayton man and his custom woodworking company that are accused of taking more than $33,000 from consumers without delivering the products they ordered.”
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell announced “a $2.6 million settlement with MedStar Ambulance, Inc., along with its parent corporation and affiliates, to resolve allegations that the company submitted false claims to MassHealth, the state’s Medicaid program.”
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced a lawsuit and two consent orders against the current and former owners of a chemical manufacturing facility in Kankakee, Illinois for violations of air pollution control standards.
The Office of the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (“MFCU”) arrested two individuals “for their involvement in a major healthcare fraud scheme to fraudulently bill Medicare approximately $142 million. MFCU and the FBI executed warrants seizing sports cars, a sailboat, and three properties, at a total value of $7.1 million, funded by illegal proceeds of the operation.”
Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown announced the sentencing of an individual “who pleaded guilty to one count of Medicaid Fraud for writing prescriptions for controlled dangerous substances without a legitimate medical purpose in the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County in June.”
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued an alert to Michigan residents making them aware of a scam “being perpetrated by individuals claiming to be home or business security sales representatives.”
New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin “announced that the Bureau of Securities revoked the registration of a former New Jersey broker-dealer agent and assessed a $150,000 civil penalty against him for violating New Jersey’s securities laws by selling unregistered securities of a startup tequila production company whose founder subsequently was convicted of securities fraud and misappropriating investor funds for personal use.”
HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin announced his office will hold its inaugural Human Trafficking Summit in October. “The two-day Human Trafficking Summit will be held October 16-17, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on October 16 and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on October 17 at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock. The Summit is free to attend and open to the public.”
U.S. Virgin Islands Attorney General Ariel Smith announced “new legislation and initiatives to prevent human trafficking, and to protect women and girls from abuse. The bill, called the Victims of Human Trafficking Prevention Act, is part of a years-long comprehensive initiative to prevent human trafficking in the U.S. Virgin Islands and around the world.”
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced that an individual has been convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison for assisting in the trafficking of an underage female.
HEALTH CARE
New York Attorney General Letitia James led a 21-state coalition in filing an amicus brief in Missouri v. Biden.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall and Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin co-led a coalition of 21 states in filing an amicus brief in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit dealing with Kentucky’s and Tennessee’s laws related to health care procedures for children.
Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson led a 20-state coalition in filing an amicus brief in Matsumoto v. Labrador.
IN MEMORIAM
Former Hawai’i Attorney General Earl Anzai passed away on Sunday, July 23, 2023.

Hawai’i Attorney General Anne Lopez said,
“Earl Anzai served the people of Hawaiʻi over a span of 25 years—as a clerk in the 1976 State Constitutional Convention, on the staff and as the Chief Clerk of the Senate’s Ways and Means Committee, as staff attorney at the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, as the Director of Finance, and as the Attorney General of the State of Hawaiʻi. Attorney General Anzai led the Department of the Attorney General courageously. Known to be public-spirited with a wonderful sense of humor, General Anzai was a strong advocate for the rule of law and the sound management of taxpayer dollars. General Anzai will be remembered as a champion of Native Hawaiians. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
AG HIGHLIGHTS
Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama honored Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall as the Crime Stopper of the Year “for his work as the chief law enforcement officer in the state, prosecuting Capital murderers, addressing fatal flaws in the criminal justice system and providing support to our men and women in blue.”
