Massachusetts Medicaid EHR Incentive Program Closes After Distributing Over $389M

The Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) and MeHI would like to thank all healthcare providers who participated in the Massachusetts Medicaid EHR Incentive program.

The incentive program was established by the HITECH Act of 2009. It was launched in October 2011 and has now been officially closed out. The primary goal of the program was to incentivize Eligible Hospitals (EHs) and Eligible Professionals (EPs) to adopt an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system and demonstrate Meaningful Use.

Over the course of 11 years, EHs and EPs across the Commonwealth acquired EHR systems and learned how to use these systems to improve the quality of care. Providers also implemented electronic health information exchange to more effectively share information with other providers and patient portals to electronically communicate with their patients.

At the conclusion of this program over $280 million in incentives was distributed to more than 8,000 unique EPs. In addition, $109 million was dispersed to 63 EHs. A grand total of nearly 22,000 applications were processed by MeHI under contract by EOHHS.

Congratulations to the providers who successfully completed the program and thank you again to everyone who participated! Your participation has significantly contributed to the increased access and advancement of care delivery in Massachusetts through the adoption of Health IT.
