A note from our Executive director, Tony Stephens.
The month of June is a special time throughout Baltimore, rich with celebrations and experiences that remind us what challenges we have traversed and what opportunities are just beyond the horizon. It is a month when we celebrate the diverse composition of our city on the Bay.
Last week alone allowed us through the newly formed Juneteenth national holiday, which commemorated the abolishment of one of our nation’s deepest scars.
At the same time, residents throughout the city were flying rainbow flags to embrace our LGBTQ+ community, standing in solidarity around the recent acts of intolerance that were on display in South Baltimore and Charles Village.
And for a blind sailor like myself, the national Helen Keller Day on June 27th is a strong reminder that nothing can stand in the way of our independence when we set our course in search of full and equal access.
The DSC is a community sailing center that embraces diversity. I encourage you to take time to embrace the breadth of cultures and experiences that come together on our docks. Take time to meet someone new this summer, and if you have time, sign up for volunteering with one of our programs that helps make Baltimore better by making sailing available for everyone.
